#401 #LetGoOfLabels It's unconscious. We are trained to use labels. You're black, white, Hispanic, asian, Indian, etc. What difference does it make? It doesn't. The problem is that labeling makes it easy to categorize. Unfortunately, it's human instinct. In ye olden days, it helped us categorize people we didn't know so that we could immediately tell if they were friend or foe. We had to identify whether they were going to steal our food and take our women and children as slaves. That's not the case anymore. In most countries, especially the US, we are not at daily risk of losing our lives. Now, I admit that there are areas in the US where there is danger every day, and it is a difficult to make the move away from that. That's not going to change overnight. However, we can do our small part by not enabling or continuing those stereotypes and labels. We have to be conscious of what we say and think. Catch yourself if you have an automatic reaction to someone. Think: is it because of how they acted or because of how they look? Answer honestly. It's not easy but in the long run, it will be worth it. Who knows. You may end up meeting people that you never thought to meet before and maybe even become friends.
