I am very disappointed in the outcome of the recent election, but not for the reasons you might think.
While I didn’t support his campaign or vote for Donald #Trump, I am outraged at the behavior of my fellow Americans in response to his victory. The protesting of not just a candidate, but all of his supporters is not the reaction befitting a democratic society. While President Trump has a plethora of flaws, one must accept that to err is human.
I want to address these reactions because they have been carried out under the guise of condemning prejudice and hate speech.
While it is true that Trump has made numerous inappropriate statements regarding women, people of color, and other minorities, these are not the sole reasons for which he was elected. Many supporters of his cast their votes because of their personal views on sensitive issues such as abortion, immigration, government healthcare, and a slew of controversial subjects. The grouping of all these citizens as bigots by the liberal movement is no different from the close minded statements that “All Muslims are terrorists.”
Prejudice in all it’s forms (racism, sexism, anti-LGBT, or even religious prejudices) is a serious issue, and it is certainly not new. Trump and his supporters are not the source. The systemic oppression of particular groups is ingrained into multiple facets of our culture, affecting our values and beliefs. Our biases against people who are “other”, is a primal reaction of fear towards what we do not understand.
The true problem in our society is ignorance, because it is this that breeds discord among us. And the solution comes not in criticizing others, but in reflecting on our own ignorance. As a member of the cis-white-male patriarchy, it is often difficult for me to grasp the extent of my social priveledge or to recognize my own implicit biases. It is however crucial to maintaining relationships with others, especially in our increasingly diverse culture. It is important that all of us, regardless of our status, learn to recognize the uncomfortable feelings we have towards other groups and identify the biases that cloud our judgement.
Education about and appreciation for the variety of cultural and ethnic differences amongst the different inhabitants of our planet will foster a better sense of unity and the understanding that ALL of us are human and NONE of us is perfect.
In the aftermath of this election, it is essential to the progression of our country to stand together to fight this problem, and not to place blame on a political party for the issues society has faced since its inception. We must learn to accept each other despite our differences and not continue to spew hate, even for what appear to be noble reasons.
We are one people, and it is time we start treating each other with the love and respect that we deserve.
