Like every other scientist-to-be, Peter Parker was stubborn and required a scientific explanation for everything; fate was an illusion and the timer on his arm meant nothing. There was not one perfect person for him. And if there was, it wouldn’t be someone he never met before, it would be someone he would grow to care about, someone who understood him, someone like Gwen Stacy from school, now that was a girl one could spend the rest of their life with.
So he wore long-sleeved shirts, didn’t participate in conversations about soulmates, even if it meant Flash and Harry had something else to judge him for. He flirted, he went on dates with people who kept longly looking at the time running out on their own clocks and gritted his teeth.
Peter, dear, Mary Jane is coming over, isn’t it time you two finally met? Running hand through his hair, trying to get it to stay in place, Peter sighed. Aunt May was determined to have him meet this wonderful niece of Anna Watson who was just perfect for him. Now, he loved his Aunt May more than anyone else in this world, but he had the nagging feeling that they had very different ideas of who would be perfect for him.
And besides, he wasn’t planning on meeting anyone today. The clock on his arm was running out, he was late already. For years he had been planning on being completely alone when the clock struck, avoid all contact. It was the right thing to do, what if the other person believed in soulmates? Best to avoid it all.
❝ I can’t, Aunt May! Already got plans! ❞
Oh, Peter, are you sure? Just wait a second, let me look at you, what did you do to your hair? Age had nothing on his aunt, who crossed the house before he could make his escape, grabbing him by the collar to completely change how he did his hair, parting it down the side like he was a little boy still. There, much better. Don’t you look handsome?
Softhearted, he didn’t have the strength in him to be mad. His shoulders dropped and he grinned, shaking his head at her. One of a kind, his aunt. ❝ Thank you, now I really gotta go, now I know she is coming, but I can’t be late. ❞ Opening the door to make his escape, he glances at the clock by the mantel, time slowing down as the arrow finishes its course.
Like a man condemned, Peter’s gaze shifts back to the threshold where a woman has appeared. ❝ Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot. ❞ Heart stutters in his chest, beating so loudly it feels like it’s trying to get out [ uncle ben once said that when he saw may for the first time, his heart leaped out of his chest as if it was trying to go home ]. He can’t breath, he can’t say anything, but his mind churns and he thinks that maybe soulmates aren’t so bad, if they look like that.
