What are your thoughts on Zero Punctuation?

Zero Punctuation was a great thing many years ago, but I fell out of the loop of watching it, and I think that’s primarily for two reasons:

The “schtick” started to get a bit old, and it’s definitely a “schtick.” Yahtzee has admitted to kind of playing a character for those videos.

For the longest time, Zero Punctuation was not on Youtube because The Escapist foolishly thought they were too good for that.

Of course, that second point is no longer true, as The Escapist finally realized that Youtube has a better, more stable, more robust player than anything they could ever hope to create, but that in itself creates an entirely new problem: I can’t just subscribe to Zero Punctuation. I have to subscribe to the full Escapist video suite.

This is a problem with Youtube as a whole. I remember back in the day being really angry because there were some shows on Machinima that I wanted to watch, but to watch them, I had to subscribe to the entire Machinima channel, which at one point used to post anywhere from 5-10+ videos per day, none of which were anything I was even remotely interested in.

More recently, this is a problem I’m having with Chainsawsuit. I really love Ports Center, but I struggle with the rest of the shows on that channel (mainly just Movies With Mikey, which leans hard on smash cuts, loud noises, and drunk slurring, just like a lot of post-Plinkett review shows).

There is absolutely no reason for anyone in this day and age to start a “channel” that contains multiple shows. This is the internet, not television. I can understand that it probably helps with exposure, but then you get guys like me who only care about one show and don’t want to deal with all of the extra baggage that comes with it.

Imagine if you were watching Netflix, and it’s like “So I see you just finished Season 2, Episode 3 of House of Cards. Maybe you’d like to watch Trailer Park Boys now, instead?” And for whatever reason, you cannot watch House of Cards without Netflix also constantly trying to shove Trailer Park Boys in your face, or My Little Pony, or Saved by the Bell, when all you really want to do is keep watching more House of Cards. That would be annoying, right? That’s what Youtube’s kind of like when you subscribe to a channel that runs multiple shows.

This wouldn’t be a problem if Youtube just let you subscribe to individual playlists like they used to. Every time they have a “What features do you want?” poll, I always write that one in. Maybe I’m the only one who cares, because it never seems to get re-implemented.

Getting back on track, though I do not pay too much attention to Zero Punctuation these days, I did end up subscribing to Yahtzee’s solo channel, where he and his buddy Gabe play through a bunch of old adventure games (including ones Yahtzee himself has made). That’s pretty cool, though most of the videos are pretty chill. Not really the most exciting things to “watch” on Youtube, but interesting to listen to while you do other things.
