I think somthing to consider when doing the 'would Jon and Martin have gotten together under other circumstances' discussion is how mutch the Fears impacted Jon as a child.
I think Jon would have been a very different person if not for Mr. Spider, that shaped a good part of his worldview.
I always see what would have happened if they haven't experienced the horrors of the past four years, but rarely seen brought up what would have happened without the impact of the horrors he experienced in childhood

That already exists? No no no, not on Erid. Not in the Mary. In America. Jon is an English teacher in Grover Cleaveland Middle after getting his shit sorted. Martin is a librarian or coffee shop worker nearby (or both lmao)
Ryland gets along well with Jon, hasn't met Martin (yet)
Jon knows something is pulling this science teacher to space. And it's not his love of it (ryland has gone on many a rant about how he loves it, but doesn't love to be /in/ it). He figures it's that fear of being in it, and the Eye hasn't left completely.
Enter Stratt.
Jon won't listen to reason. He cannot let his new friend and coworker be dragged into something so much bigger than him. Ryland goes to study astrophage and doesn't come back. Jon has to be restrained so he doesn't go after Stratt himself.
Fast forward X years.
The probes return. The sun returns to full luminosity. The files leak. Jon already knew (lowercase k) Ryland didn't sign up to go, but the conformation hits him like a truck. The only person he could see himself in. Gone. Had their autonomy violated in a similar way.
Martin is fairing better, but not well.
He has a new regular. An ex-convict who is trying to teach himself proper botany. And Martin knows a thing or two, so they start to chat.
How is bloodymary gonna be a thing? I haven't thought that far ahead. Either while Ryland is on earth, or Simon goes into this so-called "convict realisation program" – the iron lung. In that instance, I can imagine he's given the task to study Erid up close. The planet, the system, the occupants.

Martin being jealous and possessive over Jon is adorable and absolutely hilarious. Like, sorry Martin, but no one in the entire world even likes your pathetic wet rat of an eldritch monster boyfriend, let alone wants to date him.
