Montparnass was not freaking out. No, “freaking out” was 6:15 PM, now he was ballistic. He called Jehan eight times in the last hour and a half, trying to get a hold of him. His phone always went straight to voicemail. At 6:30 PM he was rationalizing, saying his phone just died and he was actually just fine, on his way home right now even. At 6:45 PM he put on a clean nicotine patch hoping it would take the edge off his anxiety. At 7:02 PM he was already itching for another. At 7:10 PM he was leaving the most frantic voicemail so far, practically begging Jehan to call him. At 7:24 PM Montparnasse was throwing on his coat, calling Claquesous, Gueuelemer and Brujon to help him track Jehan down.
