I can also imagine him when he's super tired (anbu era..???)(and in his own apartment) flopping over like a dog over the furniture and falling asleep immediately

in fics i havent written/posted i go into more detail about sakumo's home up north in no man's land, my partner has also expanded on some details on this and is actually leading into a life worsening roadtrip up north with oro and kakashi to finish up some of sakumo's business.
but since he hasnt gotten there yet, ill talk about it here.
hatakes have a main clan and branch clans, the main clan stays in no man's land up north and is the stereotypical white wolves you're expecting to blend into a place that is mostly winter. the branching clans migrate, some might settle in areas (the old hatake clan in konoha) or otherwise wander in family packs as wolves do.
the problem with being a powerful, sought after wandering clan with small numbers in family units, is that people want you, and what they want you for may not always be good, to do this, hatakes hide their numbers and hide who they have, dams and sires are dressed exactly the same, and with the fur patterns they have (body hair), it may be that it requires an animals nose to sniff out exactly who or what you're courting.
yes kakashi has canine traits. he sheds, all over, even without hrt he would have more body hair than you would expect, same as his mother (inuzuka hellion), her and sakumo were both double coated. he has ninja stock in lint rollers. he has his teeth, has his hearing/senses, and is definitely prone to canine verbalization. he teethed very early, and all over everything. and he can eat raw meat. he also has a minor mating cycle and glands relevant to such occasions internally. if you put him in a sun spot he will go unconscious
my kakashi is half inuzuka half hatake, and the two clans arent too far removed from each other. inuzuka are a sister clan to hatake, hatake stayed wild and in tune with the natural energy of the world (sakumo's white chakra lightning) while the inuzukas accepted man and domesticated themselves (much like dogs)
inuzukas being more aligned with people means they do consider gender some of the time, but for sakumo who came from up north and had no idea what the hell he was looking at, its a bit different.
to hatake, there are dams, and there are sires, and that is usually indicated via smell.
kakashi is a dam, but he decided very early on he wanted to be a boy, and to sakumo who didnt care to begin with, the response was "oh yeah sure" and then they moved on, this wasnt a problem because per hatake custom, a pup is not indicated to with anything other than name, pup, they, or it, until some level of maturity is reached
was it a bit weird for the people of konoha to hear sakumo refer to his 4 year old as "it"? sure. is it weird animal clan business? yeah probably. did it make it extremely easy to transition to calling kakashi "he" when his little genius demanded it? absolutely.
kakashi as a genius has mostly figured out gender, and his approach to gender was "i dont like that" and he b-lined to boy. he did not want to take kunoichi classes, that looked dumb.

yes sires have knots, yes there are anatomy drawings. yes it was a learning curve for sakumo to understand konoha genders and transgender people.
sakumo does fall into the dad territory of just dropping random insane lore on people like its nothing and walking away. he wore dresses for a good few years in his childhood. they were warm.
at the end of the day, hatakes know theyre wolves, not men. this life is two legs, the next is four, the next is two again; endlessly, eternally, hatake.

Could you elaborate on your hc's for... every sentence here? theres just so many fic ideas from every one of these sentences. How feral as anbu? How does he show posession? Does he treat his genin like puppies (dog puppies that is)? And how and why did he bark at Naruto (accidentally, I'm assuming) ? What was fishcake's reaction, and the rest of the squad if they were there/told?
Also, about canine vocalization, can you maybe... describe which ones and in which context i just have to know
I imagine that he'd like to play-fight like dogs and wolves do with his ninken (I do, it's very fun even tho it looks weird). does he do the dog play-bow but human form (vaguely crouched with hands like battle ready position)
For the mating cycle part, does he just feel like shit the whole time and get cramps like a human period and dog heat hybrid? How do the genin react or is he on hrt and doesn't have it? and, how often does it occur? because in bigger dogs it's twice a year, the giant dogs i believe sometimes once-twice a year? and since kashi is obv bigger than that i assume it'd be less often <-- I am guessing and am not to be trusted.

you don't have to be a person in anbu, anbu are weapons and pawns, and wolves have sharp teeth. kakashi has done many things in anbu that he is not proud of, but he survived. hatake jaws are strong, they can break about anything if you reinforce your bite.
you want canines as trackers, they have good senses, and just like sakumo, if kakashi is running you down, you're not getting away alive.
kakashi keeps an eye on what he treasures, and he keeps it as close as he can. there's a possession in him due to his breed, he guards his pack and he territory, whatever that means in the moment.
puppies are puppies are puppies. they are young, prone to being loud, frankly stupid, need taught how to hunt, coddled, and you will have to rip them from his cold dead hands. kakashi can packbond with anything, and wolves are family units. his genin are his kids, and his partners genin are his kids too
canine vocalizations. you must growl at the puppies so they learn boundaries. you must also bark at them when you're half asleep and you can tell in your soul something stupid is about to happen.
i hc that naruto has some fox instinct in him due to kuramas influence, same way kushina did. fox kits are canines, cower against the bark, let sensei nap.
how kakashi vocalizes depends on the situation and who he's communicating with, theres a lot of videos on wolf sounds you can listen to for examples but he mostly howls to communicate long distance with other canine aligned people. (or in moments of passion.)

barking is usually a startled sound, but can be a warning/due to a threat. growling is usually challenging, he's growled during a few situations with gai. (pups growl while playing, kakashi was a very vocal puppy)
whining is a very versatile noise for wolves and the same is true of kakashi, it's more than just pain, it can be a greeting, play, or even intimacy!
kakashi tries to stick to his words mostly but if you catch him off guard or put him next to konoha's wolfpack, his ninken, or even other inuzukas he'll give a few more animalistic noises.
(or if you get him in the bedroom, a happy wolf is a vocal wolf)
when kakashi was a pup and lower to the ground he could definitely playbow more, the lower ends of all the hatake furniture were victims to his scuffles and teeth. the canines still bowl him over regardless, he must lose himself to whimsy.
for the mating cycle, arctic wolves usually mate between january through march!
it's mostly that he's just crazy horny, he does still get it bc hrt doesnt actually effect ovulation, even if there is no menstruation. there can be fertility issues, but that doesnt effect the hormonal cycle that triggers with winter/spring.
i think i have some of kakashi trolling his genin with the wolfpack somewhere
hound is, by far, the most reliable guardian that kakashi has ever had (with the exception of sakumo, but even he is up for debate). my question is, what role does kakashi play in the kkhound system after pt 1? do spill the tea ☕
good question! kakashi's role stays the same in the system from 1 to 2, and that's because kakashi himself is the host of their system.
in terms of kkhound, both of them have to make changes to adapt to a more healthy balance between the two of them from 1 -> 2, hound's growth in 1 is switching from a persecutor to a protector role, while kakashi's growth centers around adopting a more healthy balance/habits between them.
that behavior has to continue into kkhound 2, but while kkhnd 1 is about changing internally, kkhnd 2 extends to changing behavior externally. internal behaviors remain a problem still, but as opposed to it feeling like "hound vs kakashi" like their system did, it is now a "kakashi & hound vs the problem" approach
as for what's happening in kkhnd 2, it's time to start addressing their individual relationships with other people, it's time to start letting hound be an individual, which requires effort from both of them.
kakashi's main change now has to be standing up for himself and not leaving everything to hound to handle, something we see bits of towards the end of hound 1, in the next chapter for hound 2 we're about to see a lot more of it.

so much! i have to project onto these men or i will go insane. my brain is a big cocktail of disorders so i love seasoning characters with trauma or other issues and just forcing them to go through it, if a fic is lighter ill try to keep it softer but if i really want to write a whump fic, no one is coming out of that without at least 8 years of therapy

for hoad i was googling the gender ratio for wolf litters at 3 in the morning. i don't know. what that necessarily MEANS for me... but it cannot be good.
this was to differentiate between hatake clan and inuzuka clan traits btw. for a throwaway line of topic that may not ever be used in fic, but it IS in my lore bible.
I just read hound a story in seven parts and I feel so insane. So so so so so so so so deeply insane. I have kakashi in my teeth and I’m shaking my head from side to side vigorously.
