So many people are misinterpreting the fruit stand scene in Goncharov and it's driving me mad. When Sofia told Katya that it was a pomegranate and not an apple, it was telling about how it wasn't the fruit of sin from Christianity but instead one of female liberation from Hellenistic mythos. It was subtly saying that in this new country she isn't just a part of Goncharov, but her own woman.
