Argentina’s Wetlands are In Danger
For anyone who doesn’t know, hundreds of fires have been burning through the Paraná Delta region these past weeks. The Paraná Delta, which runs through Argentina’s Entre Rios province, is an important wetland ecosystem home to a an abundance of wildlife species, including 50 mammals, 260 birds, 200 fish, 37 reptiles and 27 amphibians. It also plays an important role in regulating water.
The river is also experiencing extremely low water levels due to a regional drought. Most of the fires have been deliberately lit by people for overexploitation, and they are now raging out of control due to drought, lack of rainfall and low river levels.
