Maggie Knew What She Was Doing All Along. Backwards.

Though to be completely honest I wouldn’t expect anything different from her.

On page 26 of The Raven Boys (U.S. paperback version) it says, “’So, pop quiz, Mr. Parrish. Three things that appear in the vicinity of ley lines?’ ‘Black dogs,’ Adam said indulgently. ‘Demonic presences.’ ‘Camaros,’ Ronan inserted. Gansey continued as if he hadn’t spoken. ‘And ghosts.’”

You can probably already imagine where this post is going but I’m going to write it out anyway.

“And ghosts” references Noah, who we learn is dead towards the end of The Raven Boys (pages 278-279).

“Camaros” references the Camaro wheel Blue found in the man-made lake in The Dream Thieves (page 193). Or the Camaros that Ronan created while trying to replace Gansey’s. Either or, but the wheel was the first one that came to my mind.

“Demonic presences” refers to Gwenllian, who appears in Blue Lily Lily Blue. I don’t have my own copy of BLLB yet, but I recall Jesse Ditley’s story about his ancestors dying by going into the cave on his lot because Gwenllian had lured them there. While she isn’t a demon, she certainly could hold the title for ‘demonic presence’.

“Black dogs” refers to, well, Gansey’s death (begins sobbing over keyboard) that’ll (supposedly) happen in The Raven King. To recite Wikipedia word for word (thanks copy and paste), it says “A black dog is the name given to a being found primarily in the folklores of the British Isles. The black dog is essentially a nocturnal apparition, often said to be associated with the Devil or a Hellhound. Its appearance was regarded as a portent of death. It is generally supposed to be larger than a normal dog, and often has large, glowing eyes. It is often associated with electrical storms, and also with crossroads, places of execution and ancient pathways.” A) The British Isles. First we’ve got the connections of Glendower, Malory and Ronan’s ancestry to the area, so it makes sense. B) The black dog refers to death. Well, yeah, Gansey’s death, the one we’ve all known about and dreaded from page one. Or maybe page fifteen. Probably page seventeen. (Or maybe by some wish granted by the writing gods it’s actually not Gansey’s life on the line. But then whose?) C) I don’t recall electrical storms occurring yet in the series, so maybe those will pop up in TRK. D) Black dogs are associated with ancient pathways. Does that sound familiar?

So all in all, ghosts, Camaros, and demonic presences have all shown up backwards but in order in the vicinity of the ley line. The black dog sadly further confirms Gansey’s death. I partially don’t want it any other way just so this foreshadowing/prediction is actually right.

I have no idea if someone else already wrote about this so I wrote it anyway.
