I remember I read somewhere that the Viceroyalty of New Spain was in sort of way the “primogénito” which means he was sort of “the younger me” for Spain that in some ways it makes both of them closer while the Viceroyalty of Peru was probably the most pampered one (having more Spanish nobles living there than any other American colony and the life in Lima was better than in London from another thing I read)

I feel Antonio’s preference towards Mexico was more sentimental while for Peru was more material

Mexico was the embodiment of what Antonio wanted to be in his fathers eyes. Spain passed his first few centuries in a weird mix of resentment while also striving to be perceived as Rome’s successor empire and when they brought him bby Alejandro, a child born amongst massacred ashes of an empire he destroyed “conquered”. That’s it. He envisioned in that little baby everything he so desperately wanted to be as child. He would not raise his son in the slightest way his father did raise him (a very similar feeling Portugal had towards Brazil), no, Mexico would be the perfect heir groomed to reflect all of the glories (?) of his papá empire read as all the exploitation of the Spanish empire

Alejandro was definitely Antonio’s heir, even though Isabela (Dominican Republic) and Cuba were older. He was born out of empires and not a bastard scoundrel son left behind by its father. Spain molded his son to his highest expectations and you can pretty much guess what that has lead a few centuries later…

Now when it comes to Peru things get a little bit different. Although Miguel comes from a very similar background, I mean he’s Qosqo child and heir, his relationship with Antonio is much more of a second son thing. Miguel was also a child conceived in a golden cradle (and please bear in mind that this is about Tonio’s perspective and not what actually happened) but he wasn’t the object of his fathers expectations about heritage, not in the way Alejandro was.

He was the son who also received the best of the best educations and with his wits, and oh boy this one is sly as a slippery soap, he got to manage things while Don Antonio wasn’t around. Peru knew his colonial father saw him much more like a spare for his empire, and to be honest, that didn’t affect him in the slightest at all.

He had the freedom to boast around his brothers and sisters and not have the “privilege” of being the beacon for his father’s frustrations of course that went super well during the independence era

Think like Anthony and Benedict from Bridgerton but with colonization struggles in the middles

Nowadays their relationship is more complicated with Antonio, tbf I believe Miguel has a more closer relationship with Tonio than Alejandro has, but it’s not an easy thing
