PLOT DROP #1 : HURRICANE FRANCINE . current timestamp : june 4 - 10th .
hurricane francine was early in the season. so early, in fact, that she formed even before hurricane season began. she took shape quickly in the heart of the atlantic at the end of may, and by may twenty - ninth, she had picked up momentum. first, she was predicted to strike florida. then it was as if she changed her mind. virginia. then the route shifted the slightest again -- north and south carolina. she was an odd one, francine was, and the island folk began making jokes about her needing a “’lina vacation”. when the news announced she would make landfall in the early hours of june second, they had just enough time to prepare. but just barely.
the quality of the light is different on nights that a storm blows in. if you’ve never seen a hurricane roll in over the atlantic, it’s something fierce.
though, brentwood is no stranger to hurricanes. every local has their hurricane stories. sea water rising to the second floor, waves knocking out the pier, holing up for days and waiting for the storm surge to pass. so francine came, and nobody was surprised when she knocked out the power lines and the service towers. june fourth came around, and it was clear a lot of cleanup would need to be done. uprooted trees scattered the island, some people on the coast lost their siding. mrs. babcock lost a good chunk of roof, but her house was in shambles already. it was a category two, and for a little island like brentwood, that high wind is devastating. mayor winthrop organized cleanup crews, and slowly but surely the island went through the process of rebuilding again. people took down their f**ck off francine plywood window coverings, and pushed the lighthouse chairs back up. they reopened their businesses and made work at cleaning up the beaches. all was normal.
except, just maybe, it wasn’t. it felt as if something off the coast shifted -- like something had stirred. or was waking up?
but perhaps it was just the aftermath of a hurricane. yeah, that was likely it.
