“My dad always used to say that you knew you had a good day if, at the end of it, you came home tired and dirty,” Kate muses quietly from the driver’s seat as they continue down the highway, streetlights dancing across the car.
The remnants of a sun-soaked day sitting in camping chairs watching their sons play still hangs over them. She’s probably going to end up with her first sunburn of the season tomorrow, but she doesn’t care.
He reaches across the center console and takes her hand, smiling at the statement.
He knows she means just in general, but today specifically it’s directed at their twin sons currently taking a much-needed reprieve in the backseat with their tablets. Each with identical slide-on sandals covering dirt and grass-stained socks. Thankfully, for them all, the rest of their sweaty gear had been placed in the trunk; the stench just waiting to be released in the laundry room back home
Though Liam’s soccer team advanced to the final round of the league’s championship tournament, Austin’s lacrosse team only won one of their three, both boys played hard.
“I’d say your dad was right,” Castle agrees. “It was a good day.”
And now it's her turn to smile, chancing a quick look at him, the tan lines of his sunglasses on full display even in the dark. It was nice to spend time with just the four of them, the girls having stolen most of the attention lately.
Austin and Liam are always so good about going to dance conventions and cheer competitions they really could care less about, and it really wouldn’t kill their sisters to sit through a game and cheer for them.
“Mom? Can we stop and get milkshakes?” Liam pipes up. Both parents jolt at his voice; they were sure he’d fallen asleep.
Kate and Rick lock eyes, each giving the other a knowing look and a wolfish smile.
“Sure, bud. A milkshake sounds great. Remys okay?” Kate asks, pulling off the highway towards their neighborhood.
