❝I’ll be gone in the morning.❞
“Mhm. You’ll be back tomorrow night, yeah?”
❝What a mistake, saying the way I felt.❞
“C’mon, don’t fuckin’ pity yourself, sunshine. You’re too pretty for that shit.”
❝I wish you could be honest with me.❞
“Wish all you want, it doesn’t mean shit to me. I don’t owe you anything.”
❝If I told you that I hated you, would you go away?❞
“You don’t think I’ve been trying to go away for months? You don’t think the fucking problem is that I can’t?”
a thing for @ofstronghearts
You tell her before you tell yourself.
"There's a boy," you say, eyes brimming with fear, shock, something, just inches away from hers. Your hand is still on her cheek and part of you wants to pull her in again. There's a boy, but there's a girl too and you love them both, fully and deeply, but in separate ways.
"There's a boy I love," your thumb grazes her cheek like the confession is meant for her. She puts her hand over yours, closing her eyes with a smile that says she understands. It's only now that you realize you've been holding your breath, only now that you realize the truth in the words you've been trying so hard to deny. She nods and kisses you; your forehead, your eyelid, the tip of your nose, the soft spot of your cheek.
"I love you," you say softly, easily, with a sincerity that surprises even you. You kiss her back, brief but full with appreciation; her forehead, her cheek, her lips. — You tell her before you tell yourself.
Of course, it was something that crossed your mind once or twice. There's a boy and he's the only thing you've been able to think about for months. There's a boy and you can't even hear his name without your breath hitching.
Somewhere in the back of your head you knew, but it's not the sort of thing you're ready to be fully conscious of, on multiple levels. You don't understand how you can go through life, never even looking twice at a boy, but suddenly there's a boy who gives you tunnel vision. You don't understand how you can sleep with whoever you want for years and it mean nothing, but suddenly there's a boy who sets your heart on fire. You don't understand how this boy, who seems so plain and so opposite of you, can make you feel an entirely new set of emotions that have never been open to you.
Somewhere in the back of your head you knew, but the reality of the situation is that it scares the shit out of you. You're ashamed. You're guilt-ridden. You're in love.
You try for months to forget about it, and maybe that's the first sign that, this time, something is different. This time it's not just sex and he's not just a body. — It takes you even longer to tell him.
It's been over a year since you met, and you stand in front of him at some dumb fucking party she dragged you to. Your hands and jaw are clenched. "I like you, sunshine," you say, eyes brimming with fear, shock, something, just inches away from his. Your hand wants to be on his cheek, and part of you wants to pull him in again and again and again. You don't dare break eye contact. You want him to know you're serious this time, more serious than you've ever been with him. You want him to know it's even more than that, even if you don't have the power to say it out loud.
He kisses you like he knows. You kiss him hungrily, like you could swallow him whole, like you could never get enough of everything he is. You kiss him because you love him, and because your smile against his lips and the way your hand grasps at his jaw tells him just that even before you're able to say it. — You tell him and it's golden.
"I fuckin' love ya," you say casually, like you've said it a million times. You're mid-laugh and it doesn't feel strange until you see the way he looks at you, with big eyes and an expression so subtly happy you wonder if its been carved from stone.
"Sorry," you say, biting the inner corner of your mouth as if it could take it back. He laughs, shaking his head. You're laying next to each other on his bed, heads turned towards each other. This is the longest conversation you can remember having together, that wasn't interrupted with fighting or crying or kissing or sex. You've loved him for over a year and this is the happiest you've felt with him. You've loved him for over a year before you work up the courage to tell him, and you wonder for a second if you should never have said it out loud.
He takes your hand and your fingers lace together automatically. He smiles and the concern you feel vanishes like it never existed.
"I love you," you say, easily this time. He kisses you; your cheek, your shoulder, your hand. He puts his hand against your cheek, the first time you've been the one to say anything while he sat in silence. A minute goes by before the conversation resumes like it never stopped.
Your heart has been pounding against your ribs for months and, now, it's never been so quiet. You see the sunshine in his eyes, the curl of his lip, the way his hands move when he's talking. You see the sunshine in everything he is, and he sees it in you.
This is the boy you love.
