“Would you stop picking at that?!” Elizabeth swatted Sebastian’s hand away from the cake as she tried to finish decorating it. “I’m trying to do something nice for your girlfriend here.”
“What? I’m just making sure it’s good.” Sebastian rolled his eyes, mimicking Elizabeth like a child. “Besides, she’s your friend too.”
“That was your excuse when you stuck your finger in the batter too!” Elizabeth turned away for one short moment to grab the final decorations.
Sebastian took that moment to once again sneak a taste. “Well, she’s the only one eating it so it’s fine.”
“WOULD YOU LEAVE IT BE!” she whipped him with her tea towel.
“Oh no, you definitely deserved that.” Anne chimed in from the corner of the kitchen. She, Ominis, and Garreth were staying as far away from Elizabeth and Sebastian as possible.
Ominis tilted his head to one side. “At this point, Sebastian, there will be nothing left to give to Bee. Could you control yourself for just ten minutes, please? At least keep it intact.”
“It would be completely fine if he could just keep his hands to himself!” Elizabeth chided Sebastian, chasing him away from the cake.
“Hah! You’re just exaggerating.” Sebastian scoffed.
“You stole two spoons worth of batter and nicked two swipes of icing!” Elizabeth looked ready to explode.
Garreth chuckled, coming up behind Elizabeth and rubbing her shoulders to ease the growing tension there. “He’s actually stolen four, if we’re being exact.”
Elizabeth groaned, “Ugh! Why did I even let you in here?!” she pressed her palms into her eyes.
“You didn’t.” Anne said flatly. “He just intruded and didn’t leave.” Anne grabbed her brother by the collar, pulling him away from the cake... And Elizabeth, who looked murderous.
Thank Merlin for Weasley’s presence, lest Bee’s boyfriend be transfigured into a flea before nightfall.
Elizabeth took a deep breath, letting Garreth calm her before she moved to the final details, piping little yellow flowers onto the cake and the final touch:
“Alright,” Elizabeth sighed. “I think it’s finally done!”
Garreth hugged Elizabeth’s shoulders as Anne admired the cake, purposefully keeping her brother as far from it as possible.
“Alright, quickly now before she finds us! We have to get it out of here before—”
“Sebastian?” that familiar sweet voice echoed through the kitchen.
Sebastian moved quickly to cover the cake, though, they all knew it was far too late.
Bee was standing in the doorway, books clutched to her chest as her eyes flicked to every one of them — the suspicious cluster of friends... and the cake in Elizabeth’s hands.
“... What are you all doing?” a small smile tugged at Bee’s lips.
“Well... We...” Sebastian rubbed the back of his neck, moving away to reveal the cake again, “we wanted to surprise you.” He smiled sweetly.
Bee’s hand moved to cover an excitedly quivering lip as she noticed the writing on the cake. “Oh my...”
“Surprise,” Sebastian breathed with a bright smile, clearly pleased with her reaction, “happy birthday, Bee.” He wrapped his girlfriend in the warmest of hugs, his head resting atop hers.
Bee laughed in disbelief. “You all did this for me?”
“Well, Lily did.” Ominis corrected, leaning against the wooden benchtop. “Sebastian played saboteur.”
There was a brief pause between the group as they exchanged giggles.
“Well!” Garreth clapped his hands together, “since she’s already here—” he breathed, looking to the group gesturing for them to start singing.
Everyone sang in different keys. Bee wasn’t so sure that Sebastian knew what key he was in—nor did Garreth. Both swapped about three times in the short span of the song.
But it was beautiful all the same. Perfect, even.
Elizabeth sang as sweetly as she could while balancing the cake on the stand as she walked toward Bee.
Five candles were placed evenly around the cake, casting a warm glow on the Hufflepuff birthday girl.
“Happy birthday to youuuuu.” Everyone sang in unison.
Sebastian watched Bee with a quiet smile, looking far too proud for someone who’d almost destroyed said cake only moments prior.
Bee blew out her candles excitedly as one tear of joy rolled down her cheek. Sebastian wiped it away with his thumb.
Bee laughed softly through the tears. “You remembered...”
“Thank you.” She couldn’t wipe the smile from her face as she looked down at the cake. “It’s perfect.”
“Happy birthday, Bee.” Elizabeth lowered the cake onto the counter behind her, pushing Sebastian’s shoulder to get him out of the way.
It was her turn for a hug, clearly.
Anne joined in, as did Garreth from behind Elizabeth, of course. Ominis, as always, gave an approving nod.
It was during that hug that Anne spied her brother trying to sneak another taste of the cake. She stole Elizabeth’s tea towel from around her waist, whipping her brother with a force unknown to man.
“OW!” Sebastian winced, rubbing his arm before that patented smirk reformed on his freckled face. “Worth it.”
