Richard Stallman the creator of the FOSS movement, also founded the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
There are 4 essential freedoms for FSF. They are:
The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish (need access for source code to do this).
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour.
The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (need access for source code to do this).
I have posted the link in this blog to the FSF website.
There is also a conference posted on the FSF website called LibrePlanet. Here is a description on the LibrePlanet website about LibrePlanet and this year’s conference:
LibrePlanet is an annual conference for free software enthusiasts. LibrePlanet brings together software developers, policy experts, activists and computer users to learn skills, share accomplishments and face challenges to software freedom. Newcomers are always welcome, and LibrePlanet 2014 will feature programming for all ages and experience levels.
This year, the theme of LibrePlanet is "Free Software, Free Society." The conference was held March 22-23 in Cambridge, MA.
