How My Piano Moved (270)
"More emotion! One two three four, one two three four… There we go!”
Mrs. Kim tapped her fingers against the piano, keeping time while I struggled to keep up.
Chopin’s Nocturne in C Sharp Minor, released in an opus posthumously.
I mean, I had piano lessons weekly, practiced like crazy for an hour each day, and I still couldn’t get those note slides. Have you ever seen them? They’re impossible.
Still, I have pretty slender fingers (for a guy, according to Mrs. Kim), so it makes it easier for me to play scales if my finger isn’t the width of two keys. Even if those scales are 37 notes within the span of, what, three seconds? So incredibly fun. Somehow, the only way I can keep forcing myself to try is because of Mrs. Kim, partly because she scares me, and partly because she’s nice.
Mrs. Kim, my piano teacher, is super sweet, and super talented, and super nice, and super-everythinggoodandholy. But when she starts going Fantasie Impromptu on your ass because you didn’t practice is when she turns very, very scary in a way you wouldn’t expect out of a five foot two, middle-aged Korean lady. Then you start wanting to get on the floor and apologize. She’s very forgiving most of the time.
So. I was in the studio on a very nice Tuesday afternoon. I only remember the day because…some freaky shit happened that day. You would remember too if—
[tell the story in order, idiot]
Thanks for boosting my self-confidence! Golly, I feel so great now!
[…]
Fine, I’ll tell the story. I finished up with Mrs. Kim, got a lecture on practicing a bit more, said goodbye, and was about to walk home.
Then the freaky shit happened. It went down. It hit the fan.
[details, please]
I am being incredibly detailed on how the shit happened. What do you mean, “details please”?
[…Sean, seriously. you’re going to want a record of this later. do it now.]
Okay. So, basically, I was picking up a ice cream shake because why not? I was about to leave the store, with my intact ice cream shake, when suddenly this old man comes flying up to me. This dude looked like a total tourist, with a big, floppy hat and a large camera. Had a terrible sunburn on his nose too. Skin peeling off and everything. Disgusting.
He comes flying up, and I was about to take a sip of my lovely ice cream shake when he knocks it out of my hand to the ground.
I was furious, of course. Before I had the chance to say anything, he grabbed my arm with a grip so tight I thought my arm was going to break.
He started saying some really disturbing things, like, ‘you’re in the wrong territory’, and ‘your scent is very strong’, and, most disturbingly, ‘what do your wings look like’, so I freaked the fuck out. Justifiably.
Smacked him with my bag of piano books and ran, forgetting that ice cream shake on the floor. Biggest regret of my life.
[what, running?]
No, leaving that shake alone. Yes, I meant running. Something hit the back of my head, and I conked out. Head-first.
Next thing I knew, I woke up in some kind of tank, filled with liquid. I could breathe, sure. I still freaked out and tried to rip off the oxygen mask which was a bad, bad idea. Got conked out again, only I don’t know what. Only thing I saw was Halston over there, who’s recording this whole thing and been making snide comments. He looked worried, which is was the first and last time I ever saw him that way.
Woke up again, which I know sounds repetitive. But, woke up, this time on land, and Halston was there again, looking annoyed. Then, he just kind of… turned my whole world upside down. Apparently he has a recording of the conversation, so have at it.
[June 7, 20XX]
[Room B824]
So, you’ve woken up. My name is Lance Halston, and I’m your counselor of sorts.
Of what? From having some crazy old guy hit me?
In a sense. Have your parents not explained anything to you?
…They’re divorced. I’m a normal kid, we’re a normal family. This is the only thing that’s ever happened that I would need counseling on. You probably should’ve known that, counselor.
I see. In that case, I’ll be blunt with you. You’re wrong. You are a magical being, an oddity, a rarity. There aren’t many of you, and the ones in the US are tracked by the government. Normally, you don’t cause that much trouble, and then stuff like this happens.
Wait, so I can, like, make a building blow up? With magic?
If that’s how your magical power manifests itself.
[i’m pausing the video real quick to add this in: ask yourself, why was the first question you asked related to violence?]
[I was sixteen! My hobbies were playing gun games and blowing things up]
Magical… power? You’re shitting me, that’s actually a thing?
It is.
Are you sure? This seems surreal. This isn’t a prank or something, right? This isn’t an elaborate version of America’s Funniest Videos?
This is a hundred percent real, Mr. Thomas Fields. You are a magical being, although what kind remains yet to be seen. That’s why I’m also here to tell you of your immediate transferral to a special institute suited to take care of you and safely house you—
Whoa! No, I’m not moving to some fancy school! I have a life! My friends? Family?
You could potentially kill your friends if you don’t know what your power is. It’s a miracle that you haven’t. Your family, on the other hand, is clearly irresponsible and negligent for not informing a young magical being of their power. And… I regret to say this, but they seem to have vanished.
…
You don’t seem surprised, Mr. Fields.
Not much. I mean, they paid for my education and everything, but it’s not like they were around much. Like I said, I’m a normal kid.
I see. Were they the ones who told you that?
…
Your parents, Mr. Fields, lied to you. Do you have any objections now?
Yeah. My piano, it’s at my house. You can’t expect me to just leave it there. You can diss everything else, but I’m not leaving my piano behind.
Mr. Fields, the institute is in Southern California. You live in Florida. Do you mean to tell me that you want us to move the piano across the continental US?
Yes.
[the recording ended, Thomas]
Thanks, Halston. Anyways, that’s how I ended up here, in ridiculously nice Southern California. People are very relaxed in the area I live in. And the institute is just a bunch of kids fooling around with their powers, while I haven’t even found mine yet.
Maybe I’ll find it soon.
For now, I guess have to go practice piano. I finally got the first note slide down.
