The most common insecurity I write into my characters is them being afraid that they’re not “enough” or that they’re “too much” for people to want to be around. Which makes sense since that’s my biggest insecurity too, but it’s kinda fascinating how that issue has developed in each character because none of them process it the same way.
Jax is terrified that he’s not good enough, so he has an entire facade he puts out for nearly everyone to see instead of the REAL Jax, who only a select few people get to truly see.
Krayt is scared that he’s too much and too difficult for others to be around because he has such a cocktail of mental and physical issues (anxiety, autism that is undiagnosed for a long time, PTSD, and some physical health issues that stem from mostly his anxiety). He has a crippling fear of people leaving him, but he’s also scared to ask anyone to stay because he doesn’t want to be a burden. All he really needs is someone to CHOOSE to stay, even when he’s struggling, which he eventually gets with Indy and Indy’s platoon by extension. He’s actually able to heal and feel secure in his place in Indy’s platoon because they consistently show him that they’re NOT burdened by him.
Kitsune worries that she’s just not cut out for the life she feels she’s called for, and because of that, she kind of has imposter syndrome because she doesn’t think she’s good enough, even when people tell her she’s good at what she does. She knows she’s good at healing, but everything else feels scary and stressful, but she handles it so well that most people don’t see how stressed she is most of the time. She’s scared that people will shun her when they find out that she actually DOESN’T know what she’s doing all the time.
Patch might be the most fascinating case for me to write because everything about him seems to scream calm, confident self-assuredness, but deep down, he’s looking over his shoulder all the time. He grew up constantly fearing for his life after the training accident that blinded his right eye, and he learned that one way to help keep the Kaminoans off his back so much was to pretend he was more confident than he really was. It’s become so second nature for him that if that mask slips, he’s REALLY struggling. He really does trust his brothers in the 342nd, but there’s still that nagging fear that any slip-up could land him on Kamino’s decommissioning list.
I have more OCs with similar insecurities, but these 4 are the most developed and interesting for me to write.
