Kaylee woke up this morning with a really bad headache. It seems that her implants are starting to bother her again, and it's pretty bad. I've taken her to the doctor to see if we can get some medication for the pain. She's getting close to the age where she can get them removed, thankfully, so hopefully this will be one of the last times I have to do this.
I didn't want to wake you since I knew you were up late last night. Don't worry too much about us; we'll be fine. Just make sure David gets up on time, all right?
The skylight was open and letting the cool evening air through. It was mid-summer, so it wasn’t freezing, but considering the fact it was England, it wasn’t exactly warm either. The two beds that had been wedged into the small attic were covered in thick warm blankets just for that reason.
They had been rather quiet besides the occasional “hey” from one of the children as they jostled for extra space. They were quickly quieted by either Kat or Michael; neither of them wanted to deal with any sort of fighting at that moment.
Lilly then turned her head to look at her father. Her green eyes were bright with curiosity and filled with questions. Michael felt his daughter’s gaze and he turned his head to look at her, a smile lifting the corners of his mouth. He couldn’t seem to help but smile every time he looked at her. She was a little miracle, and so was her brother.
“Daddy,” the little girl said, “did you and Mommy really live out there?” Her eyes then went back to the skylight overhead and up to the endless heavens above them. Michael nodded.
“Yes, we did,” he said. “We were born out there, and lived there for most of our lives. Your mother was born in space, you know.”
Lilly’s eyes widened and she looked over to her mother. They didn’t often tell their children about their pasts. Kat’s memories were blurred, and Michael’s were painful. Their recent past had been filled was a terrible war; one that, if not won, would have meant that the children between them would have never gotten a chance at life.
“Yes, I was. But not in actual space. I was born in a space station,” Kat said with a chuckle. “My mother and father were soldiers and lived out their for a long time. I never got to know the feeling of real earth under my feet until I was five years-old.”
“Wow,” Lilly said, awed. Kat smiled at her daughter and then turned her head up to the skylight. Things were quiet again, with little movement from any of them. Lilly then nuzzled into her father’s chest, looking for more warmth. He put an arm around her and kissed the top of her head. He smiled down at her as he watched her close her eyes and almost instantly drift off.
David, on the other hand, stayed where he was. He was a teenager, almost sixteen now, so Kat wasn’t surprised that he was resisting being close to his parents like Lilly was. It made Kat a little sad that her son was trying to distant himself from her and Michael, but she knew how teenagers were. She had done the same to her parents when she had been his age.
So it was quite the surprise when she felt the teenaged boy nuzzle in under her arm. She raised her eyebrows a little and then lifted her arm just enough to let her son through. His head rested in the spot just beside her collarbone; the same place where he liked to rest his head as a little child.
Kat wrapped her arm tight around the boy and turned her head to kiss his forehead. He opened his eyes and looked up at her. She smiled warmly and he brought his head up just a little to nuzzle against her. She watched him as his eyes closed and his breathing slowed to a resting pace.
It didn’t take long for the two adults to follow their children’s’ lead and drift off as well. There was still space between them, but neither of them minded. They were resting alongside their children, warm and comfortable.
((My favorite thing about your writing is that you manage to make all of your characters seem completely alive and real, even if they're otherwise larger than life. I feel like I know them, and it makes it a lot more interesting to RP with them.))
[[ahh ty uvu i'm glad I'm able to play Shepard well enough to make her seem real
