Clean your jeans

The one life lesson I would like to pass on to people who wear jeans (which have been my favourite thing to wear since I was ten, though I didn't get to buy my first pair til I ws 17) is this: Put them through the wash in a washing machine when you first buy them - this gets anything nasty that acreted to the fabric out (from the cotton fields, or when manufactured, or while stored) and any blue dye that might stain your legs or other clothing when the jeans get rained on.

Then never put them into a washing machine again.

I mean, never. When they get grubby or stinky, soak them in cold water - under a shower, get the fabric really thoroughly soaked, and sponge off any stains or spills - then hang them up to dry, ideally inside out in direct sunlight, and - that's that. Dried outdoors in sun and breeze (and even rained on) they'll smell sweet again. If there's some real caked dirt you may need to use laundry soap in the water. It is possible everyone but me already knew this. But if you didn't, believe it: Never Put Jeans In The Washing Machine.
