coworker: it's good to see that centrifuge getting some use; most people don't like it because it's so sensitive me: *has been devising nobel prize-worthy balance configurations for every single load* haha yeah i guess i've just been lucky with it so far :)
the feelings i'm experiencing about this are akin to when a pet comes up to greet you and its owner is like "omg i never see them go up to strangers like that they're usually so shy"
developing a horse girl-like bond with the centrifuge
centrifuge: *shudders or makes noise* me: *patting its flank* shhhh... it's okay, girl...
I'm fairly certain the answer will be "because they don't want to spend money", but is there a reason your workplace doesn't just get a new centrifuge, maybe one with auto-balancing?
because the centrifuge works fine if you're pure of heart
In today's "Not A Bad Bit Of Snark" dep't at Bluesky...
(For those curious about why he's so pissed off: the Daily Kos story spells it out.) ...Tl;dr:
The film’s success at the box office comes after weeks of a bigoted right-wing campaign led by multibillionaire GOP donor Elon Musk, who railed against the film for casting people of color and LGBTQ+ actors, including Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya—who are both Black—and Elliot Page—who is transgender.

[Italian]: "Allora, la ronda giornaliera tutto bene? Operativi anche di notte, adesso. Full optional. Wela, full full full optional, [???]. Tutto bene? Ricarica a biscotti."
[almost good English]: "So, was the daily patrol alright? We're active at night too, now, huh? Full optional. Oi! Full full full optional, [???]. Everything alright? Cookie powered."
#is full optional a thing in English? like when you buy a car and get all the fancy things? (via @gods-keysmash)

Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
On this day, 21 July 1936, one of the most iconic photos of the Spanish civil war was taken on the rooftop terrace of what is now the Iberostar/Apple store buildings in Barcelona.
Taken by German photographer Hans Gutmann, the photo depicts 17-year-old socialist Marina Ginestà. Although she is captured holding a rifle, it is doubtful that Ginestà actually fought on the front lines during the war. Instead, as she was partially brought up in France and spoke fluent French, Catalan and Spanish, she worked as a journalist during the war and more notably as a translator and interpreter for the Soviet correspondent from the Pravda newspaper, Mijaíl Koltsov.
Gutmann had come to Barcelona to cover the anti-fascist Popular Olympiad games and, at the onset of the war, decided to stay to cover the conflict. He then castilized his name to Juan Guzmán. A communist himself, he had easy access to what was formerly the Hotel Colón, a building taken over by the PSUC (the Catalan Socialist Unification Party) where he took many of his renowned photos.
When the photo was taken of young Ginestà, she had never held a rifle in her hands - Guzmán offered it to her to pose with, and the same rifle appears in another photo in the same hotel of the writer Ludwig Renn.
Ginestà survived the war and fled to France as a refugee. She later escaped the Second World War by fleeing to the Dominican Republic. With the rise of the dictatorship under Trujillo, Ginestà moved to Venezuela, where she settled for many years working as a journalist and a novelist. In 2014, she passed away in Paris, France, aged 94.

reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess
all engineers are brothers (found attached to a steamship's engine):
1. 'The Squeak' apparently is originating from the Low Pressure (LP) valve. This is a large "D" slide valve with a lot of metal to metal contact. 2. We have inspected the valve, seat and LP cylinder and piston numerous times. We can find no evidence of rubbing, galling, burnishing, or any other sign of metal to metal contact. 3. 'The Squeak' is dependent on engine speed and temperature; as the engine heats up 'The Squeak' increases. Inexplicably, as the speed increases the sound decreases. 4. Suggestions about using WD-40 or needing sewing machine oil are not helpful. 5. If you wish to discuss 'The Squeak' with the Chief Engineer please donate $1 to The Squeak Abatement Fund to aid in construction of a new LP valve. If too many passengers speak with the Chief regarding 'The Squeak', the donation may be diverted to the Chief's beer fund.
fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d
I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty
I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.
Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.
When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.
Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.
See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.
So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:
Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.
