Oh yeah, I'd be so surprised and think it so odd if it was about John. But you're so right, it is really interesting! Thank you for pointing that out, I'd have never thought about it like that if you hadn't.

I think Holy Ground makes sense with Joe because of the lines about dancing and how they relate to the lyrics in Last Kiss (and also Fearless, I mean she seems to say now that it was about an actual first date which means she might now think about her first date with Joe). But then at the same time "we fell apart in the usual way" kind of echoes The Story of Us.

Lyrically I've always thought the same too. It makes a lot of sense when you compare the dancing lines to the ones in Last Kiss and Fearless (Yeah, it could have possibly been that she was hurt by it all in the Fearless era and couldn't relate such a happy and optimistic song towards him and still sing it like she did for the Fearless Tour.) And when she's talked about it, it definitely seems like it's about Joe, or at least a relationship that happened a long time ago. I've just never known what to do with that hidden message, and it just bugs me a little, you know? 

...I've just looked at the lyrics, and it's interesting, because there's also like: "And the story’s got dust on every page" which relates to The Story of Us. And there's also a bit of similarity between these two lines: "How we met and the sparks flew instantly" and "Took off faster than a green light "Go"./Yeah, you skipped the conversation when you already know" - as in that instantaneous connection. But I really don't think it's about John... so maybe the similarities are only because they're both more upbeat dancey songs?

idk maybe it’s just the people you went with cause my friends have gone with me to support me because otherwise i would have had to go alone :’)

i honestly think i would rather go alone than go with cishet ppl cos like i would be too worried that one of them would say something problematic. like if it's not a group that ur a part of then i probably don't trust u to understand and not say something shitty u know?? idk that's just me. if ur pals get it then there's no reason for you to not trust them and go with them :)

I think she implied it was about Kanye to kind of… throw people off I guess? (I can’t remember if she actually said outright it was about Kanye), like with the Red album, some songs are so vague and it has to be on purpose.

Mmh, I don't really know why she'd want to do that, although it probably was better publicity than having it be about John? (She performed it at the VMA's and sorta made it about Kanye then, I think. Although I can't really remember if she said anything either.) Exactly, I think she's too much of a perfectionist to have things like that not be on purpose. And there was one interview where she said that she didn't want people to automatically know who a song was about with the Red album, which kinda makes me think that not every song is about Jake.

Definitely! John was going through some rough things back around that time, and given that it's such a personal song, it really makes you question if she'd write it about someone she didn't really know all that well. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's about him.
