sigh of exhaustion escapes bubblegum lips, willowy body draping itself over his couch. it’s --- strange, this life they’ve built. kyle is not a father and yet, he is now clumsily stumbling his way through some bastardization of fatherhood. she’d put his name on her school applications. she’d laid it out for him, put it together in front of his eyes. she remembers how his face paled as the pieces fell into place. kyle rayner did not ask for a child, especially not one already well into her adolescence, with a sick brain that forced her to fake everything about herself when in the presence of others. if she doesn’t, they get uncomfortable and no matter how kyle reassures her that he does not care what they think of her, of the two of them, she always feels the discomfort, the creeping, sweltering rot of shame clawing its way from her stomach, tingling her arms, wanting to leap from her throat and spill, foaming and hot, onto the floor between them. she isn’t sure when she became so self conscious. she wants to make him proud. she wants to thank him. her face aches --- so when permission is given, her faux smile drops into a much more comfortable expression of bitchy neutrality.
