Connor Hawke being DC’s #1 pretty boy in Green Arrow (1988) #109
@vigilarrow asked : he tosses the apron ( mean & green ! ) in connor's direction. "suit up, kiddo. we've got work to do."
confusion sweeps over the younger archer’s face as he holds the apron in his hands. it was thrown pretty haphazardly to him, but luckily he caught it without much problem. green eyes flit down to it, a blonde brow arching in slight skepticism before he picks his gaze back up to this father. ❝ work? is it a chili making day again already? ❞
The kid never misses.

It had always been weird, seeing the other archers on TV, sometimes coming close to running into them, having her mother talk about them like she was supposed to be ONE of them all while never haven spoken to any of them. This was no different except this time she was being approached by one of them and she had no idea how to react.
She knew him of course, well, had HEARD about him at least. It had been hard to miss the news of a new Green Arrow, especially with her mother’s complains that there was now yet another guy taking attention away from her, as if Cissie herself really cared about these things. “ I hope only good things. ”, she replied, awkwardly shifting from one foot to the other. “ I’m Arrowette — well, Cissie. I uh … wasn’t SURE if I should introduce myself or not. ”
❝ nothing bad, i assure you. ❞ he quickly replies. the awkwardness between them is thick, but hopefully cissie sees that it doesn’t really have anything to do with anything other than the fact that connor typically is pretty awkward around new people. there’s something about her that seems really familiar, but he tells himself it’s likely just that she bears a resemblance to mia in his mind, and not the possibility of it being a resemblance to someone they could potentially both share a resemblance to.
❝ it’s nice to finally meet you. robin has mentioned you to me. it’s always nice to see more archers, honestly. ❞ sometimes when he’s with a hero like green lantern or superman, he suddenly feels so small. it’s nice to see others fighting a similar fight. ❝ have you been doing this long? ❞

𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐁𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐎𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑, settling into the drivers’ seat and gripping the wheel which reflects the insignia on his chest. thumb presses a small button which brings the vehicle’s roof back into place, and as he starts the car up, he spares a glance toward his passenger. ❝ it shouldn’t be too long, ❞ he conjectures; ❝ twenty, maybe twenty-five minutes. ❞ there’s a moment of thought as they peel from the curb, starting to head due south. as much as he doesn’t particularly mind the silence, he’s picking up on hawke’s discomfort. begrudgingly, a hand strays toward the batmobile’s built-in radio, flicking it on to the first station it provides : this one, in particular, being a station devoted to popular songs of the 1980s. ❝ this button changes stations. you can — switch as you’d like, but do not touch anything else. ❞
he gives a small hum of understanding, his hands settling atop his knees as he leans back a bit into his seat. his eyes still travel around, looking at all the buttons, gadgets, and gizmos that the car is decked out with. he heard something about once upon a time, his father used to have a car dressed to the nines like this, but he never had the chance to see it as oliver had moved on from the arrow-cave and arrow-car phase of life by the time connor came into it. roy had all the best stories about it, though.
he’s brought out of his thoughts when batman turns the radio on, and he quickly shakes his head. ❝ i appreciate the thought, but i don’t really know music that well. ❞ he admits. his discomfort is more so towards the whole situation. all this technology has him out of his element. ❝ i mostly was just taking in everything in the car. it’s all way more high tech than what i’m used to, is all. i don’t want to find out what happens if i was to press any of these buttons. ❞
❝ -- did i miss anything? ❞

jason puffs out a long breath, thinks back to an earlier time ; earlier memories. what do you get people that already have everything? ( you get them something that can’t be bought ). “ something personal. ” brows nudge upward in contemplation a moment of silence, then reset. “ —knew someone once. his dad was, pretty well - off. had everything, so to speak. so, instead of looking for something store - bought, he spent months repairing this old watch that used to belong to his grandfather. thing hadn’t worked in years, but plenty of sentimental value so, was a nice little surprise when it was all put together and done. ”
his stare, which had meandered off, gravitates back toward connor ; upon which jason offers a rather nonchalant shrug. “ y’know. shit like that, i guess? ”
something personal -- well that made the most sense. it was reminiscent of what he told kyle that one christmas. ( why don’t you just tell that person how you feel to their face? ) then again, he did that more than enough, so something of personal value, not monetary, certainly seemed like the right next step. though, that’s when it got complicated again. brandon was the sort to never hold on to something long, cycling it out for new over and over again because it was what he knew to do.
❝ that certainly sounds like the right idea, but i guess it’s still difficult figuring out what works. ❞ he admitted, shoulders sagging as he concluded he was still in the same exact spot he had begun in. ❝ and the person you did that for -- uh, i mean -- the person that person did it for. did they appreciate it? ❞

SHADES OF VERMILLION tend to blend unto the pigemntation of night ; diluted in a sweep of stance. perplexion weighs heavily unto covered gaze. “ not exactly. ” shadows give way to appearance in single stride.
“ manbats in arkham ; serving up a sentence of ten years . . . estimated guess is he’ll break out by tuesday , though. ” brief consideration flashes upon features till he’s shrugging , eyes glancing upon the bat-signal’s refracted light threaded between clouds. “ that ──── means trouble. ”
he moves to stand upon the roof’s edge , “ you coming ? ”
this seems to be shaping up to be one of those situations that connor is woefully unprepared for, but he’ll try his best, just as he always does. he listens to robin’s -- err, red robin’s -- explanation about yet another member of batman’s rogue’s gallery that has run amok in gotham at some point.
( seriously -- what do they even do in arkham if these people just keep getting out again? )
❝ yes. ❞ he quickly replies, stepping up on to the ledge beside the other. he reaches for an arrow in his quiver, one that’s got a rope attached to the end of it so he can scale rooftops and buildings like the rest, but now he has an idea. ❝ -- might know a way we can catch up. ❞

if jason’s ever given off the impression that he was good at picking out gifts for people, he’s done something very wrong. but for connor to ask him must’ve meant he didn’t have anyone else and, against the odds, jason actually doesn’t mind connor’s company. “ that, is an excellent question. ” cants his head to one side. “ what kind of person we talkin’ about here? ”
❝ he’s -- ❞ materialistic. vain. a bit egotistical. ❝ well, he’s the sort that already has everything he could ever want. ❞ he explains, knowing that it likely isn’t helpful in any way, shape, or form, but it’s the truth. ❝ i’ve never really been the sort to give presents, but he’s done so much for me this year. i feel like i should really get him something nice. i just don’t know where to start. what do you get for people that already have everything? ❞
