I’m almost done with “We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled”. My heart aches for everyone affected by the turmoil in Syria. Through the terror expressed in the stories of Syrians, however, there are messages of hope. This quote in particular reminded me of what John Green has said about education in the past, and why it is so critical to have access to education. An educated population is good for the whole, and uneducated population is only good for those in power. “Public education does not exist for the benefit of students or the benefit of their parents. It exists for the benefit of the social order. We have discovered as a species that it is useful to have an educated population. You do not need to be a student or have a child who is a student to benefit from public education. A sign of peace in a world of tension. I’m reading “We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled” by Wendy Pearlman as part of #lifeslibrary and, as with other life’s library books, it is truly an amazing book. Pearlman has established a collection of accounts from Syrian’s about the Syrian crisis. In this passage a person recalls the 27th of Ramadan, where the community prays at the mosque together and eat a meal together before sunrise. A few brave men take food to the soldiers surrounding the mosque. The soldiers refused. Food has a way of bringing people together. Those men tried to reach out through this conflict. They were rejected. We need to become better, as a community, to reach out to others and to not reject those reaching out in kindness.
