My Messi tag is very extensive - go wild, have fun! *g*
How I feel about this character: he is a precious cinnamon roll. Seriously, though, he is. I wasn’t sure about Neymar at first, mostly because of the media circus surrounding him, the hype, everything that comes with Neymar-the-media-property. But once he turned up, his actions spoke louder than words. He’s a good kid, he tries hard, and I really admire whatever it is about him that lets him not just take the media attention in stride but actually thrive when dealing with people.
All the people I ship with this character: I don’t ship Neymessi quite as hard as Neymar ships it (because I don’t think that’s possible) but I do enjoy their relationship a lot. It’s reassuring to me that they get along so well, and every now and then I have an attack of feels because they echo Messi’s relationship with Ronaldinho so well and so poignantly.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Dani Alves, man. If you could be in a bromance with anyone, why wouldn’t you pick Dani Alves? He’s an amazing friend, he’s lots of fun to be around, and he’s the best team mate you could hope for. I love how he immediately took Neymar under his wing at Barca and I like that they bring this infectious energy to everything they do. Their joint anti-racism initiative was boss too.
My unpopular opinion about this character: the hair, the social media, the ads, the entourage, the lifestyle? Irrelevant. I hate the fact that whenever something goes wrong everyone rushes to blame it on his appearance and outgoing character and media presence. It’s insidious and wrong. (Don’t even get me started on diving as the greatest evil of them all. Nope.)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character: the pressure he’s under when he plays for Brazil is starting to remind me unpleasantly of the unhealthy cycle Leo Messi is stuck in with Argentina. Neymar needs not to have the entire country on his back. He needs to play in a tactical scheme that maximizes his talent. He needs a manager who isn’t afraid.
