If she didn’t know any better, Eri would have her face pressed against the glass of the oven so she could watch the cookies bake. It would be fascinating to watch them expand, she thinks. But Eri does know better, so instead she keeps an eye on the sweets from a safe distance, a step or two from the oven, just enough that she barely feels the heat radiating from within.

“Are they nearly ready yet?”, She asks – innocent, curious, not pushy – while she looks up towards Shoto. Her expression’s a hopeful one; he’s clearly the one to make the call, to take the cookies out, so Eri can do nothing but wait for him to make the long-awaited decision.

Still, that doesn’t entirely prevent her from initiating her best ‘puppy dog eyes’, just in case it’ll succeed in swaying Shoto a little early.

Izuku's neighbor was a friendly older lady who should really consider moving into a nice comfortable house instead of sticking to her one-bedroom apartment on the 36th floor of this highrise building. He suggested it once and she said it for sentimental reasons, that this apartment was purchased for her by her good-for-nothing son when his luck finally turned at the casino one night. An inconsiderate gift, but one she would keep because it was the first time he ever gave instead of taken from her.

Twice a week, Izuku helped her with grocery shopping and in exchange, she offered to keep an eye on the activity around his property, notifying him of any visitors, missed deliveries, or if the plants on his patio looked like they were on their last legs. Instead of texting him tonight, she actually called, seeming rather excited to report on a certain good-looking man standing outside of his door.

"Sorry, have you been waiting long?" Izuku pulled the hood off of his head, having just finished his run in the light drizzle. He knew Shoto was coming, but he hadn't expected the other to get here this fast. "Come in, come in." He glanced down, noting the luggage in his friend's hands, but opened the door without commenting on it.

"Want some tea?" What he really wanted to ask was did you have a fight with your girlfriend? But maybe that could wait. Izuku was used to this type of situation by now since he was one of the few still single losers of the former 1A (and everyone knew about it since the magazines were always putting him on those young eligible bachelors lists). Over the past five to six years, he's had more than a few guys crashing over whenever they needed a place. First time for Shoto though.

      “ Yes! ” She exclaimed enthusiastically. She would do her very best to try!

     “ I have the perfect tea to season the cookies! I’m sure Todoroki-san will bake something incredible as well. ”

𝗜𝗭𝗨𝗞𝗨 𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗢 𝗕𝗔𝗗 . though he supposes he shouldn't be the judge of that ╱ his sense of colour theory and overall style isn't the most trustworthy, and he isn't sure todoroki is any better. but they were tasked with decoration ! and, izuku being who he is, didn't want to be stepping away from the challenge until it was disastrous.

❝ do you think we should include some gold ... ? or maybe it would be too busy with another colour tossed in ... i'm not sure. maybe if ... ❞ izuku stares at the tree and begins to mutter under his breath, unaware, furrowing his brows. if shouto tries to grab his attention, he doesn't notice ⸺ not until he comes to a conclusion, smiling at the heterochromatic boy. ❝ we'll stick with the colours we have ... ! we have the class ornaments to add as well, so we don't want it to feel too much if we already have too many colours. ❞

it was going to be too much either way ╱ it wasn't like the class ornaments were coordinated to work with each other. but it's the thought that counts, right ?

izuku all but beams at the todoroki though, ushering over to a box and carefully picking up two different stars ; his mother and himself had a tiny tradition to balance all might meticulously on the top of the tree, but this wasn't home. with all these years of putting all might at the top, though ...

❝ u ⸺ umm ... todoroki, which star do you think is better ? ❞ izuku lifts the stars for the other boy to look ╱ one is silver with glitter on it, already dusting up his hands and likely about to leave him sparkly for a while. the other was a more intricate silver frame without any glitter. ❝ i think aoyama might appreciate the extra sparkle on the tree, and it's nice, but i don't know ... ❞

𝗞𝗔𝗧𝗦𝗨𝗞𝗜 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗔 𝗛𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗥 . some days, though, the floor is remarkably enticing, and on his worst days, all he wants to do is lay there and re-contemplate the world around him. considering how his day went at the endeavor agency ? the floor looked damn good ╱ and now that he's down there, it's pretty fucking comfortable, too.

his eyes briefly glance at shouto when he decides to join in. katsuki wasn't against it, per se ⸺ but there was a furrow of his brows as the heterochromatic boy settled next to him, a slight huff leaving his form if the other dared look over, turning crimson gaze away. did he look like he needed company ? because he sure as hell didn't ; katsuki tried to make a point of looking unapproachable as he settled on the floor of the common area, but he was convinced the todoroki didn't understand what that meant unless it slapped him in the face.

❝ what ? stop givin' me that look. ❞ the blond grumbles and shifts his arm to cover his eyes, deciding the light was too much. ❝ i'm down here 'cause i damn well feel like it, y'know. ❞

among other reasons ; he'd recover fast enough, but his head was still swaying a little from the intensive work done at the agency, his body reacting to the new nitroglycerin levels he was achieving through the winter. the nausea wasn't any good, either ╱ but hoping it'd go away before anyone noticed he was there was just wishful thinking.

he feels the heat.

feels it grazing his skin as it scorches his mother’s flesh and bone.

it’s ironic. laughable, almost. she had spent her entire life trapped in a burning cage, consumed by smoke and cinder, despising fire—only to be embraced by it in death. it’s a shame, he thinks. a shame, because he’s not the one turning her to ash.

had they asked, he would.

had they asked, he would’ve been delighted to.

it would’ve been the best present, the greatest gift a mother can give her son. happy fucking birthday.

but that’s all wishful thinking. he can’t use his quirk anymore. they’ve got a nullifying chain wrapped around his heart that would electrocute him if he even tries. there’s probably a tracker on the damn thing too. ( that’s the deal. if you agree to it, you’re free to go. they made his body a prison. funny, isn’t it? how mercy and sadism go hand in hand. )

“she must’ve been in despair.” he takes a step back from the cremation chamber and peers over at his dear little brother who is, notably, not as little anymore. a few years has put a few centimeters on shouto’s height. “it was your birthday, right? the day she died.”

to die on her youngest son’s birthday and to be cremated a week later on her eldest son’s birthday—fate has an odd sense of humor.

“were you sad?”

his gaze finds its way back to the flames.

“i wasn’t,” he says after a moment. “i’m glad she’s dead.”
