          there hadn’t been a single year where he hadn’t sat on the train with the mauraders. after all, they’d all met because they were squeezed into a carriage together. now, though, he was required to sit with the prefects. because he was head boy. and when lily walked in, his worst fear was confirmed. pinned to her robes was the head girl badge. james groaned. had dumbledore really lost his mind? ‘ evans. ‘ he was at least trying to look like he wasn’t freaking out. ‘ have a good summer? ‘

His father had long since got tired of his presence, and the longer the summer took to go by, the angrier Tobias got. Despite being tormented in Hogwarts by Lily's housemates, the young Slytherin would take that over the wrath of his father any day. ❛ I'm fine, Lily. Just...haven't been sleeping too well. ❜ That should be enough to appease her, at least for now. Or so he hoped anyway. ❛ I cannot wait for summer to be over. Have you thought about which electives you'll take this semester? ❜

         he’d actually just been trying to ask her about an exam they had coming up. he had a legitimate question. he wasn’t there to bother her or flirt. sirius had called his name, and he had turned away from lily for just a second. when he turned back, oh. he didn’t expect that. was he dreaming? was he dreaming? no, he wasn’t going to question it. lily evans was kissing him, and he wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. every bit of his attention was focused on her, one hand on her waist, the other gently cupping her face. and he kissed her back. this might be the only time he could ever kiss her. might as well try to make a good impression. 

       when the kiss ended, yes, he was sure he did look hopeful. ‘ is that, maybe, a yes to a date? ‘

         ‘ you’re-- ‘ she’d seen the pictures. mr. and mrs. potter holding harry as a baby, waving his chubby little hand at the camera. and this was that woman. this was harry’s mother. she was dead. except she didn’t look dead. hermione looked at herself, and she didn’t seem dead. ‘ you’re lily potter. ‘ the timeturner around hermione’s neck had only just stopped spinning, and one of the golden rings broken off its axis.

there’s a familiar tug in his chest at the voice he can hear nearby -- he’d recognize that voice anywhere, and although she was far from speaking to him ( considering they were hardly on speaking terms to begin with ) her tone and the familiarity of it comforts Severus to a fault. it brings him contentment as much as it brings him heartache. only when he turns to hopefully catch a glimpse of fire-red hair does he realize she’s drawing nearer -- and he can’t very well duck behind anything to hide himself. so he steels himself instead, swallowing thickly and drawing upon a false air of confidence as she nears. 

“ Lily. ”   he nods, black eyes falling on the shorter girl with a muddle of fear and desperation; all masked by a cold, hard-to-read gaze. his walls are up again as they always are.   “ I trust you’re well. ”

EYES CRINKLED AT THE CORNERS AS Elsa turned her attention back to the snowman, crouching by his side to talk to him, arms folded over her knees. 

“Not yet,” she explained, taking one of his twiggy hands in her own. “They will be though. Are you excited?”

She could still remember the day Kristoff had nervously knocked on her door all those months ago, red blush covering his face to his hairline. It had been easy this time to tell Anna’s suitor yes, to give him her blessing. He had already slotted himself into the role of ‘brother’ in her life — it would be nice to have that made official.
