When I am out sketching people, I usually do it when I have some free time at my disposal, except inside toilets. Sometimes, when this difficult-to-hide activity gets noticed, I do get the odd request to draw a person. I mostly I give in with a mild feeling of stage fright, which gradually settles down. Apart from these occasional instances, I have been choosing my subjects for sketches all my life; however, this changed drastically when a little elf appeared in our lives back in November 2013. For the first time, my subject chose me and went on to become the thesis of a lifetime. He is my muse, and the only living creature I have drawn this prolifically. As I returned home from work last night, my four-year-old son came running to me. He wanted to show his new gift that he got from his Aaji (his maternal grandmother). It’s a Casio calculator which he thinks to be his laptop. The numbers flashed on the screen as he swiftly pressed the keys. Looking at it, I was reminded of the days in my childhood when I played with numbers in a slightly different way - by playing hopscotch.
