A Spark Unseen exclusive from author Sharon Cameron:
This is a working model of an invention from my latest novel, A SPARK UNSEEN, a machine that the genius, childlike Uncle Tully uses to generate an experimental form of energy: electricity. This model was built by my husband and designer of all cool machines, Philip Cameron. Philip has built models or drawn schematics for all of Uncle Tully’s inventions. (See his handiwork on the opening pages of THE DARK UNWINDING!) Here he has created a high frequency induction coil, now known as a Tesla coil (named for one of the inspirations for Uncle Tully’s character, the brilliant, yet slightly crazy inventor, Nikola Tesla), but Uncle Tully refers to the device as his “lightning box” or his “spark machine.” This was a new yet known invention of the time, featured in articles in the leading science journal Philosophical Magazine, but it’s what Uncle Tully does with his machine that is the true invention, making electricity fly unseen through the air. We do it all the time now, of course, every time we talk on the phone or use a remote. But in the 1850’s, those “sparks unseen” were nothing short of magic.
