6- What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year? Looking over all of our fics to try and see if there's any dialogue I feel particularly strongly about has me realising just how LITTLE dialogue we write lol (< guys who are definitely more comfortable with NOT dialogue). I think it's a tie between coffee's:

Mello [...] interrupts himself. ‘What?’ ‘Not you,’ Near replies. He can’t say more today. Caught in a deluge of paperwork to conclude the Kira case, he hasn’t slept in fifty-two hours and the veil over the world looks thin at the edges. ‘Have you slept yet?’ Mello frowns. ‘No.’ His arm twitches, towards Near. ‘You should.’

(and even then, it's my favourite less because of the dialogue itself and more about the UNSAID in it), and rustling's:

Every so often Near finds something forgotten in the pockets of his borrowed coats[...]. It is too regular an occurrence not to be suspicious. One time he gets up for a midnight snack and unexpectedly finds an explanation in the hallway. ‘So it is on purpose,’ he says. ‘I don't know what you're talking about,’ Mello replies, still portioning out sweets from the bag he’s holding into various pockets. ‘Of course.’

(which I ALSO like vastly because of what Mello is NOT saying, and I love that apparently even when we write dialogue we DON'T write dialogue. If that makes ANY sense??)

8- Which fic this year was most fun to write? to escape an empire. We currently have a bit of a love-hate relationship with chapter 7 because it's been so goddamn HARD to tie up in a way we're happy with (even though we have the epilogue after that ready to go AND THEN a couple sequels in the works), but the fic as a whole has been by far the project we've had the most fun writing AND the most fulfilling in terms of actually stretching our comfort zone / improving our writing skills!!! (the latter having been immensely helped by @neallo's wonderful beta feedback on the first few chapters which. MORGAN THANK YOU SO MUCH I PROMISE WE'RE GOING TO START POSTING SOON!!!! HOPEFULLY NEXT YEAR. WE'RE NEARLY DONE WITH OUR DRAFT!!!!!)

10. Is there a character or ship you'd love to write for, but haven't yet?

several!! i was just that talking about attempting yuri beyondlaw, and i would really like to do that. i've considered fem!L x Wedy or Aiber, too. i would like to attempt L more often in general, really. on top of that, i have in my drafts Halle x Gevanni (also yuri) and. believe it or not. Rester x reader. i'm not even into him like that but on principle it's insane to me that the #1 beefcake (aside from maybe mogi) gets no love in the x reader scene!!!

8. What is your favorite line/section from bury us both?

this one is tough omg. which makes it a great question. chapter 12 is overall my favorite and the last 3 sections are imo some of the most effective of the whole fic, but i mostly find them impactful bc they're together. my favorite section otherwise is probably from chapter 10, below the cut :')

“Don’t,” she interrupts. “Please. You wanted me to tell you what it’s like.”

“Right.” Mello swallows noisily. “Go on.”

When Near is eight, she is moved up to the same class as Mello. This is how it happened in their last life. It’s different, though, because even after Near beats Mello on the first test and then the second and third and so on, they don’t stop being friends. Mello is angry with her, but Near doesn’t let her alone. Somehow, she knows Mello needs her to cling closer, not to give her space.

They figure things out earlier this way. They are young when they realize they were made as a matching set, two halves of a whole. They know that they have to take care of each other before it’s too late for them to actually do it.

Mello looks after Near, and Near looks after Mello. L remains a distant dream, not a man that dies at twenty-four and leaves the world in their still-growing hands. The two of them are children together, and then teenagers.

When Mello kisses her for the first time, it is not a surprise. They’ve both seen this coming for years. There has never been anyone else. Near has always belonged to Mello; Mello has always belonged to Near.

“Nathalie.”

In this universe, Mello cradles Near’s face and makes a small sound of desperation. Her eyes are dark and wild.

“Mello?”

“Miha,” Mello says. “You— you still call me Miha.”

Chidori! Ok, small rant: before the shunin exams Might guy tells Naruto the legend of how Kakashi split a lightning bolt with his now legendary technique 'chidori' aka lighting cutter. I thought this was so cool and was hoping to see it during a flashback. Then in episode 288 of shippuden, during a lightning storm Kakashi dashes towards a lightning bolt that would kill him and Might Guy for sure... he prepared the attack and right before he connects... the camera cuts away!!! No! Not on my watch!! 10- Is there a character or ship you'd love to write for, but haven't yet?

I don't think so! Pretty much anything and anyone we'd love to write for, we've already tried our hand at. We do want to eventually get around to completing a Mello POV fic that isn't "Mello introject from sweet atonement" (who's kind of a special beast by virtue of his circumstances); technically we have written some of that for throw me into life, but that's on the backburner right now (we'll get back to it once we're done drafting to escape an empire).

WAIT NO I LIED BY FORGORSSION. I'm not erasing the above because we put thought into it, but we do want to write at least one Near/reader fic eventually lol.

31- What fic meant the most to you to write?

pretender (from sweet atonement verse). Not going into our personal system lore on main (though we'd be happy to elaborate in private if you'd like to hear it!), but the tl;dr is this: we pulled this piece out of some deeply personal places. Writing it helped catalyse and crystallise a number of things important to us that had been left hanging for years and years.

9- What song(s) fit the vibe of your favorite character? !! That's a DIFFICULT one, actually. We have plenty of shippy songs lined up, but stuff that reminds me of Near on his own…? Hmm. I got nothing with lyrics. That said, I think he'd be really into experimental/contemporary classical stuff like this album (Spotify link | YouTube link), which, I hope is a satisfying type of has his vibes? :D

(I am also taking this opportunity to share our headcanon that Mello would be REALLY into Heilung, like this or this or this or this, because we've been thinking about that for LITERAL WEEKS.)

30- A character that needs to be mentioned more. Naomi Misora!!! Wanted to give her a spot in our WIP crossover AU MelloNear fic, unfortunately her established personality didn't quite match the type of character we needed in the scenes we could've had her in (nobody else in canon fit either so we made an OC instead) </3
