A cold hand reaches forth to lightly grab the hero's wrist. There is no intended malice within the action, but a sinking feeling within his stomach settles an uneasy sense of dread as he looks at the person's back... they seem awfully familiar to him.
The shadow wasn't the only one caught off guard by the sight of the other. Just as his doppelganger though Link to be dead, so had Link thought Dark had fallen to his blade. The Hero could clearly recall the image of the shadow stumbling back, a sick gurgle escaping his (its?) throat as red -- a stark contrast to the pure black that made up his body and clothing. It stained the front of his tunic, and left an unnerving mark in the water even after the shadow had melted away.
He had gone to the Water Temple at Zelda's behest. Something was wrong there, and Link had agreed without a moment's hesitation. She wasn't the only one who was suffering from the nightmares; images of a great evil had been plaguing Link's sleep as well.
And here he was.
And here the shade was.
At the touch, Link whirled around, hand reaching back to the hilt of Death Becomes Her. A pause, and then...
...
"... You."
"You're dead."

There were two options over why Ganondorf had decided to send Sheik out to what had once been the Water Temple, a sacred place for Hylians and Zoras alike. What residing in there was a monster, one who had taken captive the winged light that had been the Hero's faithful companion and guide (for that title could not go to Sheik, no; he had lied and led him astray and to his eventual death). It was the monster who had finally plunged his blade into the Hero's chest, causing his life to drain away as his body fell limp into the stained pool of water.
Option one: Ganondorf no longer trusted that monster, the one who masqueraded around wearing the Hero's face, and wanted Sheik to put an end to him.
Option two: Ganondorf no longer trusted Sheik, and was expecting the monster to plunge his blade into his back.
Option three: Both were true, and Ganondorf was simply waiting to see which would emerge the victor from this confrontation.
“Watch over him.” Those had been his only- No, not quite true. Sheik could still vividly recall the smirk that the King of Evil had worn as the sheikah had been forced to look up at him from his knees. “Entertain him as you do me.”
Considering how Sheik had felt about Link, and the face the Shade wore-
He shoved those thoughts out of mind as the sheikah stepped into the reflective room, rippling footsteps the only thing that marred the image beneath his feet. Traversing through the temple wasn't necessarily simpler now -- Ganondorf simply had spells set up to create warp points within it. Of course, just because Sheik had been allowed to warp in...
