The first time I read through Lackey’s elf motorcycle books, I thought the restriction on elf magic to making over/greebling preexisting human works was… alien, just something arbitrary, only glancingly familiar. vampires counting rice. Then I did literally any work in 3D and IT’S SO REAL. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STARTING FROM SCRATCH ON A BOOT AND ELABORATING GLORIOUSLY ON AN EXISTING ONE IS SO, SO FUCKING REAL.
