carter who still continues to fuck his way through the entire roster of women he does, seeking something remotely comparable to the love he never got from his parents, at the same time in a decades-long situationship with peter “actually, no, you don’t look a thing like my father” benton, the only person (maybe bar abby) who sees every one of his glaring insecurities and the fact he’s so needy and his desperation for validation and approval and knows exactly where it comes from
carter who is so completely physical, every thing about him bounding puppy dog, and peter who has a million rules for himself for who he has to be and how he should behave in the world to garner respect and carter who for reasons of all elements of privilege intersecting has never had to police himself, who is open and it drives benton crazy up the wall jealous insane because how easy it must be to live like him?
and carter. who has been emotionally interpersonally starved for years (losing his brother, parents pulling away, gamma the only true familial relationship he has) seeing in benton a sister and a mother and a family who adore him, who are so proud of peter for who he is what he’s made of himself, and so he gets to be golden boy and do what he likes (which he takes advantage of, because he can, he puts his career before them). carter who has never felt like his parents have been proud of him for anything, being a surgeon at a county hospital is a disappointment to the family, this life that to peter's family is everything to be proud of.
they are so deeply intensely envious of each other in absurdly realised ways. carter needs benton's respect like he needs to BREATHE. benton hates that carter's respect is something he needs because he also doesn't want to need anyone. but he does. he cares for carter so deeply, he wants him to succeed at first as an extension of himself but slowly, through carter earning his respect, as himself. as an emergency physician, not surgeon, who is making his own path taking on peter's advice but also finding his own way. which is possibly even MORE attractive to him than carter trying to be everything he wants him to.*

*benton who launched himself down the stairs when he heard the news and was the one to put carter back together again and a year later followed him out of that intervention into the street and took a punch and got on that plane and put carter back together again and ten years later sat by his hospital bed and went up with him and made sure those surgeons fucking put carter back together again and did it RIGHT because that is peter’s BOY.
because even when carter has no-one he is still bentons boy, and the truly tragic thing about john carter is everyone assumes he has someone, it's taken as a given that carter is always someone's boy, someone's looking out for him and after him and time after time that person is peter benton. in s15 for a hot minute the only person who is looking out for him is peter. no family, no kem at his side but you know who is???????
