for the character meme: Cornelius Hickey?

First impression: Probably a visceral response to the questionable beard. I think I also had a pretty visceral reaction to the characterization of Hickey in Dan Simmons’ novel far before I watched the show, but nothing’s exactly come along to change that one. 

Impression now: I’d kill for this lousy little man.

Favorite moment: Him thrusting his tongue into his cheek exasperatedly in front of Crozier. 

Idea for a story: I still want something where Hickey is in a heroic role -- I love the initiative he takes at Carnivale, and the way he’s attuned to the structures of power and the flow of gossip on both ships seems like it would suit itself to an investigatory role, so I might as well combine that with my need to write vampires in everything I touch. Vampires as class metaphor, Demeter jokes, and tuberculosis.

Unpopular opinion: I can understand Irving’s motivations for what he himself views as a humane act in permitting Hickey a chance to correct his behavior and still be pissed off about it! Oops, I guess that’s an unpopular Irving opinion. (Not that unpopular.) I think Hickey’s more pragmatic than he is wicked, and I don’t believe his pre-canon interactions with Gibson were consciously malevolent and manipulative.

Favorite relationship: The one between Hickey and Crozier is all about ambition, disobedience, weird self-loathing, and sneaky commonalities, so of course I’m super duper into it. (Also Jared Harris has hot n sexy front teeth.) 

Favorite headcanon: Hickey having strong opinions about industrialization and labor.

I feel like Bunny from The Charioteer has accidentally-on-purpose pulled this stunt. Maybe a fic where he pulls it on Ralph, while they’re on a work assignment, and that’s how they end up together? A tale of manipulation, poor choices, and everyone else in the Bristol LGBTQ+ scene going, “... really? He fell for that?”

In the ancient world, definitely common enough to require regulation: lots of societies and cultures had eunuchs – usually slaves, so not so much choice in the matter for them, and as far as I understand the matter ‘wounded in his stones’ was a lot more common method of castration than ‘privy member cut off’, though the latter did happen too.

... huh. But wouldn’t eunuchs have been mentioned at some point before? I mean, this is somewhere in Deuteronomy, and there’s been multiple instances of laws before that, and various ones regarding both procreation and servants or slaves?

And, I mean, it’s not necessarily their own choise, but it has to be someone’s choise, at some point, right. It’s not something that’d just sort of accidentally happen, I’d hope...

Also, why. I mean, I cannot imagine people had much need of castratos at the time?

oh yes, you’re completely right! Sorry, my brain is all scattered today. Earlier I was re-reading the bit about Frank beating David in their swimming race even after giving him a head start, and I must’ve conflated his general athleticism with having long limbs/being tall, d’oh!

Aaah... a fanblog for David Blaize! Where have you been all my life? Don't feel obliged to answer (I'm fairly rubbish at fancasting myself, but I'm always intrigued by people who do like doing it) but who would you cast in an adaptation of the novel?

oh my, what great food for thought! Personally I’d really love for them to cast younger— actual teenagers in these roles, rather than the usual thing of adults playing teens. Unfortunately it probably wouldn’t happen for this film adaptation though :/

I’m not super familiar with enough of the current crop of young British actors to really be much help on this question atm (I’ll revisit this later once I’ve familiarised myself with some options), but I am extremely curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. And everyone else, too, please weigh in!
