Nope, still Ow The Edge. The whole point of Robin in well written iterations was giving him closure on his parents to be sure he didn't grow up to be Batman. The child soldier accusation is the reason he didn't HAVE a Robin for years after Jason died. They are not deconstructing this, they're building it themselves. =/
Interesting take, but... I kinda have to disagree? I mean, much as I love me some well-written Bats (and I do!) there are in fact some unfortunate implications to what he’s doing. And if literally anyone should have known that turning a kid into a weapon and turning him loose on random unrelated thugs doesn’t give him closure, it plunges him into an endless uphill battle, it’s Bruce “my parents are dead!” Wayne.
“I’m going to train him to be Batman Jr. so he doesn’t grow up to be Batman!” is a pretty shit rationalization. Even if it was originally about giving Dick closure (and I accept that that might have been his intent!), Bruce fucked up by the numbers.
What’s more, it pretty quickly became not about giving Dick closure, as evidenced by the fact that literally every other Robin had living parents.
You might not like what they’re examining and exploring here, you might not like the show (I’ll be the first to admit it’s really uneven-feeling). But arguing that an examination of the real-world impact of children being trained and used as weapons by someone who sets himself up as an authority figure in their lives is not a deconstruction is... an interesting angle.
