god it's crazy. reposting my thoughts from twt like it's just really good to the point i feel less articulate than usual but BROOOO. the fact it's his distortion line.

the fact that in this world he doesn't reach distortion because unlike in the real world, where he genuinely held onto the belief of catherine's love, this time everything rotates around the hate and the abuse. but here he doesn't reach distortion because there is no belief to shatter- there's never been any real hope of getting to escape. once again reminding me of the book scene where heathcliff reunites with catherine and tells her that before they met again he planned on killing hindley, then himself. this id is at that point where he does not actually have anything worth holding on for, he's stalling on this murder he'll never manage to commit, because he knows there's nothing waiting for him at the end. god.

the rest of the lines we saw are also connecting back to the distortion scene-

which in itself calls back to the hound from their visit to the grange, famously one of the worst days of his life.

while in this world he does not have a strong enough belief and a strong enough love to cause distortion, it is the same kind of mindset... becoming the hound that destroys everything in its path because there's no other way for life to go. in the main world he embodies the concept as a reflection of the abuse and of his impression of having been to blame for everything bad that happened to the person he loved, but in this one the latter point just doesn't even come up. it's all about the suffering he's enduring, with no escape. heathcliff.....

the foxkitty creature in sunshower's art confirmed to have always been cathy symbolism... rly cute. heathcliff's mistrust for it reflected his feelings for her, the disbelief at the idea of her affection and instead perception of any show of care for him as either insincerity or pity. we also see the same theme in wild hunt's ID story, and both of them are based directly on his feelings about this in the book.

but despite telling himself that it's an uncaring creature that'll leave him anyway now he's sheltering it. maybe he does remember when someone did it for him.

sinners terms of address btw

meant to do it for a while but now seemed like the right time. checked the script and compiled the sinners refer to each other- i noted the kr honorific down when in the eng text it was translated as (name) only. i might've missed something, but i hope it's still useful! here's some extra notes too

extra note i forgor: faust and gregor typically refer to each other without any honorific in kr, so the rendering of herr/frau in eng seems to be trying to suggest that they're kind of casual with each other, rather than implying they're particularly professional/polite.

person he's known since he was a child makes him feel unguarded and weak but is also his closest friend and person that knows him best in the world

grew up competing with and imitating a horrible male role model, then realized that wasn't the type of man he wanted to be and decided to forge his own idea of masculinity

out of linton's many insults he's particularly hurt by the comment on his worth as a man and how he would never be a proper husband

goal is to become a "man of quality"- initially meant as a thing about money and appearances, but after his canto it becomes about being a trustworthy guy who can protect the person he loves and whom people can rely on, a role he's actually proud of

gets flustered and really happy when commented on how he's "grown into a right proper gentleman"

sorry #posting again but it's been on my mind cuz i once again saw a post and i just. really really hate the way this bit is so often taken out of context to make her out to be dismissing and belittling him just cuz she felt like it, because a lot of the story does hinge on the fact that this was in fact a reasonable worry

heathcliff of course has reasons to take it personally, but the context of the entire canto tells you why this was a problem to begin with. we also see it during the rest of the game, cuz he mellows out as the cantos go, but we can't forget at the start he was out there killing his coworkers. then in canto vi we get more about it. nelly starts here jokingly:

but by the end she's very serious about it:

the cycles of abuse is ofc one of the main themes in the canto, like in the book where heathcliff assumes for the second generation the role of their own hindley; in game he's growing both in the shadows of hindley and of his other mirror selves. but it can't really be ignored that the problem WAS there and he was shaping up to be just like them (a person used to violence to the point even someone as close to him as the woman who raised him had reason to believe he might hurt her!) and that catherine is discussing it in the hopes of figuring out a way to give him a place to heal and grow out of that absolute hell that was growing up in the heights. it just feels really weird to always discuss that part as if catherine was being cruel for no reason, when heathcliff himself admits that he left because he feared he'd murder her

instead by the time of the canto, while hindley, linton and nelly all comment on him not having changed, he continously chooses to be the better man, avoiding unnecessary fighting, lending a hand to people in danger, and ofc standing strong against the erlking's provocations and attempt to turn our heathcliff into another just like him, to continue the same cycle.

BUT it's important that back then he was a person who wouldn't have done that, a person who would have hurt his loved ones, and that what he had in mind was taking revenge on them- because he grew past that in the course of the story, then that character development is much more meaningful. and that's also why it's so important to all the people around him, who had seen him start to go down that same path as hindley, to become the worst version of himself--

because in the end he didn't become like that! he did change and become that better person, and they noticed!
