I made the mistake of searching your blog on reddit to see the discussion, and came across a high rated comment that said "medievalPOC is just shamelessy promoting their political agenda." So encouraging diversity in modern media is now a shameful political agenda to these people?
A lot of people say that.
There are a lot of white people who think that having people of color, (or women, disabled people, gay/trans/queer people, or really anyone who’s not exactly like them) in a movie, show, or book is “forcing unwanted diversity into [thing] for diversity’s sake!!!”
I really have no idea what that’s supposed to mean, other than, “we do not want people who are not exactly like us to appear in movies, shows, or books”.
So…having a problem with the current state of practically zero diversity in media is called a “political agenda”, shades of Rush Limbaugh yammering on about “political correctness run amok” or whatever.
All I’ve really done is show people some artwork, written a few essays documenting how U.S. education is whitewashed and Eurocentric, and answered questions about any of those things that I’ve been asked.
I mean, as far as “political agendas” go, if I was a politician, I’d sure as hell NOT be getting re-elected, considering how much backlash there is to me doing ANY of that.
But back here in reality, reddit is just a place for people to go to complain about how evil and wrong Medievalpoc is, how I’m disseminating bad information, and some shockingly personal attacks on who they *think* I am, without having to substantiate any of what they say with documentation or links.
It’s basically at the point where I could mention that sometimes people have eggs for breakfast and someone would post it to reddit screaming “Irrational and Over-Emotional SJW Promotes Egg-Eating Agenda Without Historical Sources and Screams at anyone Who Disagrees, Sh*tlord!!!!”
I think there are somewhere around 40 total threads, maybe 5 (?) of them positive…it’s like a neverending youtube comments section, and I don’t read them for the same reason I don’t watch TV dramas about high school…I’m rather sensitive to actually perishing of vicarious embarrassment on behalf of strangers.
It seems there is a contingent of people who find it extremely offensive to see someone 1. caring deeply about a bad situation that harms people and 2. doing something about it to the best of their ability. At this point, not only could I write a book on the content of Medievalpoc, there could definitely be an additional book about the experience of running Medievalpoc.
TL;DR: don’t read those threads, it’ll only hurt your brain.
