Man, this scene hits a lot harder when you consider shipping with the man.

In canon-compliant headcanons below the cut

Linari definitely wouldn’t have known Haurchefant cared for her as more than a friend (for her noticing everyone else’s feelings, she’s also a bit dumb).

She would have also been in hella denial about liking Haurchefant as more than a comrade as well; but she was also going to be focused on saving the world as she normally does.

Linari would have definitely been shocked at Haurchefant intercepting an attack meant for her. 

And as soon as his shield broke and he was hit, she would honestly start tearing up right then.

Linari Ari is someone who normally never cries, no matter how much she wants to, but she would have been overwhelmed with guilt. 

First she couldn’t save Foulques (as much as she wanted to, and to be friends with him) and now she can’t save Haurchefant either. 

She forced the smile when Haurchefant asked it of her, but as soon as his eyes closed, she starting wailing. 

Linari would also feel so much guilt to tell Lord Edmont what happened and to give her condolence. She wouldn’t even be able to look him in the eyes for it, heavy as her heart is.

It’d take Linari’s heart a long time to heal after that because this would have been a romance that could have been explored, but never blossomed. 

IN MORE NON-CANON COMPLIANCE HEADCANONS:   

If he survived it by a literal hair, Linari would chastise the SHIT out of Haurchefant while he was recovering and demanding to know why he would risk his life for her.

*insert very sappy love confession here*

Linari would see Haurchefant while he recovered as often as possible as a result. 

They don’t actually start “courting” until after Haurchefant fully recovers.

And Haurchefant is so dang sappy and proud to be courting Linari.
