Using a Linear Potentiometer
The linear potentiometer, sometimes referred to as the rotary potentiometer, is a device that is used in electrical applications. The most common application for this type of thermometer is in the measurement of alternating current (AC) voltages. The device contains two mercury spouts that are attached to a dial. As the current flows through the water in the spouts, the length of the wire through the center of the earth, called the commutator, causes the current to either increase or decrease.
There are several other types of electrical conductors that can be measured using this device, but the best use of a linear/rotary combination is in AC electric measurement. Another application that uses the rotary form of potentiometer is in the measurement of resistance to alternating current (AC). There are also other factors that need to be considered in the operation of a potentiometer, including the amount of current flowing through it, and the distance from the measurement device to the testing equipment. This device is also used to find the resistance across a load, or even in the measurement of the resistance across different components.
The two main types of rotary devices available to Australian users are the rotary screw rotary combination devices. Screw rotary combinations units are usually constructed out of high alloy steel and are extremely durable. They are able to withstand a wide range of temperature and can operate for long periods of time before having to be replaced. There are also some screw rotary devices that are constructed from a single piece of high-carbon alloys, which are more thermally resistant but are prone to fatigue failure over extended periods of time.
