THE FIT LIFE JOURNAL by Rick Copley Entry #81 "A line in the sand" I have always said that the key to long term sustainable results in fitness is an increase of intensity. Without intensity you can get more fit but the resulting metabolic conditioning that comes with intensity is where the real magic happens. The other key factor to fitness is variety. When you have both your results increase exponentially. Today I want to focus on intensity. There is a major problem. Intensity is hard. Over the last 30 years or so we have seen life get so much easier because of technology. Life in 2018 is much different then life in 1988. It's so much easier but yet our health is so much worse. It's cause and effect. Life gets easier so we get fatter and sicker. So where does intensity fit in? Simple. We have it ingrained in our hearts and minds that everything should be easier. There is a quicker, easier and less expensive way. Truth is that intensity is hard. We don't like hard. We shy away from hard. We avoid hard. We pay extra money for less hard. Fitness isn't like everything else. You still need to work hard and increase your intensity. I'm sorry, but the 8 minute abs video is a fraud. So how do you add intensity without getting hurt or frustrated which leads to quitting? That's the point that I want to make today. It's the little piece of value that I want you to walk away with. Draw a line in the sand then cross it! What does that mean? Make an effort in the gym, or at home, or wherever it is that you exercise, that is more than you have done before. THAT is your line in the sand. That is your limit. Next time you will get there and say, "That wasn't so bad..." and you will cross out the line, step over, and draw a new line. If you want to run a marathon and you have never run before what does your first run look like? It's a couple of minutes probably. That's your line in the sand. The next time you run to that line, cross that shit out and make a new line.
