Relocating from Bird Site

Hi friends and neighbors! with Twitter apparently collapsing I want to make sure I've got some place to keep the Linguistics in the Wild content going, for the half-to-whole-dozen times a year that I get around to posting. Honestly Tumblr is probably a better format for the medium-length things I do at this point, so this is probably good, but I'll probably set up a Mastodon or such as another way to send these posts (and gather content, since Twitter was such a good source of things too).

Pop Culture’s Most Famous Linguistic Scientist

The new Star Trek movie comes out this Friday, featuring Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, chief communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise! The character made famous by actress Nichelle Nichols in 1966 is also a proficient technician and a reliable bridge officer. Her Swahili first and last names mean Star and Freedom.

Despite the fictitious character's role in, in many ways the real science of language has proven to be a critical tool in peace relations and scientific advancements. Those who comprehend the depths of words and are just as well able to recite them, are wielders of great power.
