4 Powerful Link Building Methods Most Commonly Overlooked
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Over the years we’ve seen a lot of changes when it comes to the different methods that can be used to bring more visitors and business opportunities to a website. For the most part, there are some tried and tested methods that have not changed very much and probably will never change; one of them being link building.
For some, there is skepticism as to whether or not link building is “dead” and for others they are pushing ahead and prioritizing backlink acquisition as the days and years go by. No matter what you believe, links are still an extremely important aspect to any digital marketing campaign; and not when it comes to just SEO. Some of the not so popular benefits of this marketing tactic is brand awareness, referral traffic, and increased social media engagement. We won’t get into those areas of link building, nor will we breakdown the “ideal” link building methods since they’ve already been covered in a previous post HERE, but instead… let’s consider 4 powerful link building methods that are often times overlooked.
1) Competitor Backlink Acquisition – For just about any SEO campaign starting out with an analysis and/or research, looking at the backlink profile of websites ranking well for the keywords that are being targeted… is almost automatic. Unfortunately, something that is all too common is that when the research/analysis is done, most marketers stop there and never put in place a strategy that involves reaching out to the websites that provided the links with highest impact for the website that ranks well.
One of the benefits of this strategy is that it doesn’t have to end with just one competitor, it can be done for 1, 3, or 30 different websites. If you can imagine for a moment how your search engine optimization campaign would succeed if you have a few backlinks from 30 different competitors… would it be worth the time and effort? For most, they would say yes… but truthfully it’s a tedious process that many people seem to overlook and ignore.
2) Relevant Human Moderated Directories – Similar to the general sense that some people feel about link building as a whole, as it relates to it being “dead”… getting links from directories in the eyes of many is a method of link building that is dead; but that couldn’t be further away from the truth. One of the reasons directory link building has such a bad reputation is that there are more spammy and useless directories than there are good ones.
Most of the best directories out there are both human moderated, and often times the submission comes with a fee. Those are two things that often times identify the good directories over the bad ones, but also it’s important to see if any of the highest ranking websites in your industry are already listed there. Directories like Dmoz, Yahoo Directory, BOTW, JoeAnt… to name a few. You can simply do a Google Search for “best directories for link building” and you can usually find an updated list somewhere with supporting evidence of the benefits.
3) Infographic Creation & Promotion – With more and more internet users wanting information that is to the point, easy to digest, and visual… infographics are a great way to give them just that and website owners love nothing more than free content for their target audience.
A well designed, researched, and promoted infographic can literally be the difference in writing a useful piece of content only to have it linked to or shared by a few people vs a unique infographic that is shared among 1,000s of people and sometimes linked to 100s of times; not to mention the promotion of your brand. Yes, it takes time and resources to have all the data presented in a visually appealing way, but it’s a great way to get a lot of relevant backlinks in a short period of time “naturally”.
4) Internal Linking – For many websites that have a full on SEO campaign in place, but things are beginning to plateau… often times all it would take to see further improvements is a well-planned and structured internal linking campaign. This can be done using the navigation menu, within content or the body of main pages, and of course in the footer of a website.
There are definitely ways to do this wrong and go overboard, but this is another link building method that can be extremely powerful… yet it’s overlooked. Aside from the SEO impact of this type of linking, internal links are a great way to map out the path that you’d like your visitors to take in order to get them to convert; whether that means buying a product, signing up to a service, or simply providing their email address.
Stop Overlooking Some of the Most Powerful Link Building Methods…
If you want to set yourself up for a successful digital marketing strategy that results in continued increases of organic traffic, new visitors, referral traffic, and repeat customers… these and other powerful link building tactics have to be part of your overall strategy. Yes, most, if not all, of these methods take time and can be tedious. For that reason, you might want to look into how you can invest in link building services to help with this aspect of your marketing campaign.
Again, these tactics are not the only way or the best way to build links for your website… but they are definitely as powerful as they’ve ever been and they’re commonly overlooked. Do whatever you can to rid your mind of any thought of the possibility of link building being dead, and that it shouldn’t be part of your marketing campaign. Also be sure to keep in mind that backlinks not only benefit SEO campaigns, they’re also extremely impactful for other areas of digital marketing.
