Let’s talk about the mirror.
No doubt you’ve as likely come across a reference to the three sacred treasures, the sword, the jewel, and the mirror Yata no Kagami (八咫鏡) being referred to as Shintai. However, the mirror used with a Kamidana is called a Shinkyō 神鏡 sacred mirror, and is not a Shintai 神体. The term Shintai refers to the divine body of the Kami which is venerated. In the case of a Kamidana what you will typically find is going to be an Ofuda or other talisman representing a divided portion of the Kami which is placed within the Omiya, the little shrine model, and out of sight save for on special occasions, or when a stand is used on a shelf that doesn’t have an Omiya. More often than not the Shintai is the actual body of the Kami such as with Mount Fuji. It is very rare for a Kamidana to actually house a Shintai. Shinkyō 神鏡 literally means Kami Mirror. The word is also phonetically identical to (神橋, shinkyō) meaning sacred Bridge.
Obviously the Kitsune in the above picture indicate that this Omiya is dedicated to Inari-Sama. The foxes act as guardians and the messengers of Inari. The white foxes are typically referred to as Byakkosan, Shinko (神狐 Kami kitsune), or Kenzoku/Kenzoku-shin. The first meaning white fox the later translates as family though in this case probably means something akin to guardian. As with all Japanese words the actual meaning is dependent on the characters used to write it. There is undoubtedly more than one translation. Shrines dedicated to other Kami will often feature Koma-inu (狛犬). Of the two the Komainu are more common and can even be found at Fushimi Inari Taisha as well. Nor are shrines limited to the two. Other animal messengers include wolves, deer, rabbits, and frogs (カエル kaeru). The significance of kaeru (frog) is that it is similar to 来る kuro which translates to come. Shrines will often place little frog statues around the shrine as an unspoken massage to come back.
