Stars (for the drabble thing!)
Stars: Our characters under the stars together
A teasing, airy breeze tugged at Elizabeth’s hair as she lay, splayed out, along the soft grass. The familiar night murmurings of crickets and other creatures echoed pleasantly through the air. With a haze of sleepiness shrouding her face, she tilted her head to the side to take in the view of her companion. She had always found Eleanor to be appealing. The brightness in her blue eyes, the soft way in which she spoke to her, there was so much to adore, but, beneath the gentle glow of the moon, Elizabeth was certain she had never seen anything, or anyone, so beautiful. The mere thought sent a faint pink blush sweeping over her newly freckled cheeks, and she was grateful for the dark concealing such a tell-tale feature. From what she’d learned in the world above, relationships between those of the same gender were greatly looked down upon. Not for any good reason, that she could find, but looked down upon nonetheless. Shifting, Elizabeth stretched languidly, then sat up on her elbows, her sapphire eyes soft with affection.
She paused, eyebrows drawing together, thinking. In life, risks had to be taken, or else no one would ever reach their full potential, or they’d spend their days alone. Hadn’t she already learned that wasn’t enough for her? Taking in a deep breathe, she turned to look down at Eleanor, a genuine smile gracing her lips. “You look very lovely tonight,” she murmured, feeling her cheeks flare up with heat. What if she took it badly? What if she didn’t feel the same? What if – It was too late to ask those questions. She’d spoken, and the words could not be taken back. It was better to finish, to let her know how she really felt. “Pardon me for being so bold, Eleanor, but I—” her eyes shyly drifted to the ground, to the space between their bodies. Delicately, she placed her hand over the brunette’s. “I really care for you.”
