questions about the writing process.
♕ - What are 5 writing tips you’d give to beginners?
Stock up on icons/gifs/icon gifs (whatever medium you use). ONE HUNDRED IS NOT ENOUGH. IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH —- You might be wondering WHY this is included in the writing process, but let me just tell you a thing: icons can be monumental in helping you to reply. I know sometimes I’ll know just the icon I need to inspire myself to center a reply around it. I’m weird like that. Maybe others are too.
Pace yourself. If you post replies too quickly, you might burn yourself out quickly, but also wind up pressuring your partner. Make sure you guys have that all worked out. If you notice it stresses them out try throwing it into your queue or drafts. And vice versa!! If your partner replies too quickly, DON’T stress yourself out trying to match their speed because you might not write what you wanted or expected yourself to write and you can beat yourself up over it.
Actually look up words you’re unsure about. Don’t just use words because you heard them once or twice in relation to something. It may be COMPLETELY off base from what you thought and you may confuse your partner.
…PURPLE PROSE can be nice but is usually more harmful than it is helpful. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been confused by a book, a fic, or an RP post because of purple fucking prose. I want to write a story, not a poem. It’s fine if you write like that and you find partners it works with, but when you overdo it, it might scare some people away.
GRAMMAR. Ah, yes. The most paramount of all of these. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IT DOES NOT HURT TO SPELL-CHECK. IT NEVER HURTS. IN FACT IT IS ENCOURAGED. We’re here to write stories, yes, but we’re also here to improve our writing, as well (and if you aren’t here to improve your writing I don’t know what you’re doing because RPing is such a wonderful outlet for getting better at articulating things, tbh). Learn about the oxford comma, learn about the comma in general, find out when and when not to use a semi-colon as opposed to a regular colon. These are all very great things to know and can definitely help your words flow much better.
♎ - What is one thing you love about your writing?
The personality I put into it, I guess? I try to think how the character would write about themselves or write about the situations they’re currently in but in the third person. I think that little personality quirk I add to my replies in roleplays is what makes them unique.
✕ - What would set you entirely off roleplaying with someone?
When people constantly harangue me. Yes, it’s alright to notify me when you’ve replied a few times, but when you continuously bug me I get annoyed and push that RP to the bottom of the list. I haven’t had this happen recently and I’m grateful, but it doesn’t make it any less off-putting.
