When I was little, one of my favorite books was Lafcadio by Shel Silverstein. Not only did it have the amazing illustrations & humorous text by Silverstein, it had a marshmallow-loving lion as its main character! Who wouldn't love that?! * But what really always stuck with me was the end & how Lafcadio realized he wasn't quite a regular lion & he wasn't quite a man. He didn't really belong in either worlds. * As a Korean-American girl, this hit home. I didn't speak Korean & I wasn't very girlish, so I never quite fit in with the other Korean girls. And no matter how hard I tried to fit in & would sometimes forget about my differences with my friends & classmates, a casual comment would often remind me that I didn't quite fit in there either. And the dichotomy was present at home as well, where I grew up as an independent, outspoken American daughter of traditional first-generation parents. Lafcadio didn't provide any answers for me, but I found comfort in seeing internal struggles similar to what I felt written down in a book. I wasn't alone.
