There was the Cinnamon challenge, the Ice Bucket challenge and, now, the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge.

Teenagers insert their lips into a shot glass, small jar or bottle, then suck out the air, creating a vacuum. The hope is they’ll end up with pouty lips like the reality TV star. But some attempts have gone awry: girls end up with bruises, soreness and even torn skin.

What we expected VS What really happened with the Kylie Jenner lip challenge

I have recently been looking at how  a celebrity can influence our identity. What I found is that most of a person’s identity is represented through celebrity culture as a sort of cult that groups tend to follow and if they sway from this are almost never in a specific ‘clique’. Let’s look at Kylie Jenner as an example. I find that she is most defiantly not famous through stardom, but as a celebrity.  So basically, Kylie styles herself in a way that gets her in the media for her fashion choices: this then inspires others to dress this way. Taking a look at Kylie Jenner's dip-dyed hair in 2014 we can see this was a big crowd pleaser. Just from looking at YouTube videos alone one can see how popular this look was popular.  

What we can take from this is when we follow a celebrity trend, this then classifies us in a particular way, helping to bring us together as we can identify with one another through having similar interests. 

 Although celebrity followings can bring people together, their influence can also have a negative effect. I looked into other influences that Kylie Jenner has had and found that some of her influences aren’t very good. The Kylie Jenner lip challenge of 2015 had an unhealthy effect on youth cultures. For those of you who don’t know, the Kylie Jenner lip challenge consisted of people sucking their lips into a shot glass in order to get the full and plump lips that Kylie Jenner has. These fans wanted to identify with their idol therefore they tried to change themselves, but this only left them with damaged lips. This became somewhat of an internet fad and led to not only her followers doing it, but different youth cultures giving it a try. Negative effect? I think so.
