A segmented spider, Liphistius desultor, from Penang, Malaysia. Segmented spiders (from the suborder Mesothelae) are the most primitive living spiders in the world. They have virtually remained unchanged from late Palaeozoic times to today. Sometimes they are referred to as living fossils. (Copyright © Mike Gray, "Spider Origins" Australian Museum).
Perhaps my favorite of my #petSpiders: #Liphistius cf. ornatus (ornate armored #trapdoorSpider)! Some points of interest: 1. 1 leg/palp at the base of each silk tripline, waiting to feel prey to walk by 2. eyes on a cute little orb atop the head! 3. those leg spines! They're used to grab and pull in prey --- Liphistiids are the most 'ancient' of all living spiders. That is, all other spiders are more closely related to each other than to Liphistiids. So, these spiders have traits that are very similar to the ancestor of all spiders! --- (i've been struggling w/ whether or not to post my photography these days. It feels very empty to be like "hey look a cool spider!" when there are so many horrible things going on that need our attention. but I think I need to keep doing art for at least my own sake) --- (if you enjoy my photography, please go and take action. donate. demand that your university/lab make changes to fight systemic racism. attend protests. don't let up until there is some change) --- #arachnology #arachnidsofig #arachnidsofinstagram #tarantulasoftheworld #tarantulasofig #tarantulas #petspider #spiderverse #spidersOfInstagram #spidersofig #spidersOfInstagram #macro #macro_brilliance #macroperfection #macrophoto #macrophotography #InvertOfTheWeek #invert_macro #amazingArachnids #exploreTinyWorlds #naturePhotography #wildlifephotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CCYp5-PBFTg/?igshid=1k05rbgdey6wv

For #Arachtober 22nd, swipe watch a #Liphistius trapdoor spider grow up from a spiderling into their adult coloration, and check out their trapdoor decoration skills! 1️⃣ Sep 2019 2️⃣ A baby catching food! Oct 2019 3️⃣ Apr 2020 4️⃣ (what I see of them most days) 5️⃣ Jul 2020 #amazingArachnids #exploreTinyWorlds --- If you are falling in love with these wonderful spiders and want one in you life, please remember to only get a captive-bred baby! Captive bred spiders are healthier and make better pets. I got my two Liphistius from @fear_not_tarantula, and I've also seen @palp_friction_tarantulas sell them as well. Collection of wild individuals is one of the leading threats to this and other species. --- #arachnology #arachnidsofig #arachnidsofinstagram #spidersunday #spidersOfInstagram #spidersofig #SpiderScience #wildlife_perfection #wildlife_macro #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #macro_brilliance #macro_perfection #macro_highlight #macrophotography #macrophotos #invertsofinstagram #InvertOfTheWeek #invert_macro #natgeoyourshot #natgeowild #nature #naturephotography #wildanimals #trapdoorSpider https://www.instagram.com/p/CGpprJtsCk6/?igshid=w2anh3dv2bre
For #Arachtober 20th, one of my pets & a fav arachnid: a #Liphistius trapdoor spider! This species looks 'ancient'; they still have traits that we otherwise only see on fossils of early ancestors of spiders, like a segmented abdomen! #amazingArachnids #exploreTinyWorlds --- Liphistius spiders are actually the inspiration for my own version of a SpiderMan that studies spiders to improve their crimefighting! (yes I have a #SpiderVerse OC how are you surprised) For more, check out my interview with @thenaggingnaturalist! --- #arachnology #arachnidsofig #arachnidsofinstagram #spidersunday #spidersOfInstagram #spidersofig #SpiderScience #wildlife_perfection #wildlife_macro #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #macro_brilliance #macro_perfection #macro_highlight #macrophotography #macrophotos #invertsofinstagram #InvertOfTheWeek #invert_macro #natgeoyourshot #natgeowild #nature #naturephotography #wildanimals #trapdoorSpider https://www.instagram.com/p/CGnDT8usTy7/?igshid=moew164zqfs9
