What is Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, is a cosmetic and reconstructive procedure that uses a patient’s own body fat to restore volume, enhance contours, and improve the appearance of specific areas. This natural technique involves removing excess fat from one part of the body—such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks—and transferring it to areas that require volume or rejuvenation, including the face, breasts, buttocks, hands, or body contour irregularities. Because the procedure uses the patient’s own tissue, fat transfer is highly biocompatible and carries a low risk of allergic reactions.
The fat transfer process consists of three main steps. First, fat is gently harvested through liposuction using small cannulas. The collected fat is then carefully purified to separate healthy fat cells from fluids and impurities. Finally, the refined fat is strategically injected into the target area in small amounts to ensure smooth distribution and optimal survival of the fat cells. The procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the treatment area and extent of the procedure.
Fat transfer offers both aesthetic and functional benefits. In facial applications, it helps restore youthful volume, soften wrinkles, and improve skin quality. In body procedures, it can enhance curves, correct asymmetries, and create a more balanced silhouette. Additionally, fat contains stem cells that may contribute to improved skin texture and long-term tissue quality. While some of the transferred fat may be naturally absorbed by the body, the remaining fat cells establish a blood supply and provide long-lasting results.
Recovery after fat transfer is usually mild, with temporary swelling or bruising in both the donor and treated areas. Most patients return to normal activities within a short time.
